The Carson City 10-year-old all-star team dug itself a monumental hole to start the game, and could never quite recover.
Truckee scored 10 times in the first inning and withstood a valiant Carson City comeback en route to a 16-14 win Friday night in the District 1 tournament at Governors Field.
Carson City returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m. One more loss and the locals will be sent to the consolation bracket.
Truckee took advantage of shoddy fielding by Carson in its first-inning surge. Carson made three errors, walked three batters and hit a batter. Cadell Moulton had a key two-run single to lead the charge.
Carson never gave up, however, cutting the lead to 12-11 in the top of the fourth thanks to a run in the second and twin five-run outbursts in the top of the third and fourth innings.
A wild pitch scored Nick Heald in the second and Eastyn Hendrix started the third-inning surge with a run-scoring single. Heald doubled home a run and scored on a triple by Ethan Cook. Ryker Russell followed with an RBI double. Russell actually scored on the same play thanks to a two-base throwing error by Truckee that made it 12-6.
Hendrix had a two-run single to start the fourth-inning surge. He eventually scored on a single by Kaiden Kuhlman. Heald completed the surge with a run-scoring single, the second of his three hits on the day.
Truckee rebounded with three in the bottom of the fourth for a 15-11 lead as Vincent Long and Ivan Esparza delivered key hits. Carson made it 15-13 in the top of the fifth with two more runs, as Hendrix delivered another run-scoring hit and Ash Wilkin drove in a run on an infield out.
Truckee added a run on Long’s infield single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 16-13. Russell delivered a run-scoring double to make it 16-14, but he overran second and was tagged out for the second out of the inning.
The next Carson hitter was retired.
Hendrix and Heald had three hits each, while Russell and Noah Hutchinson added two each.
