Fallon senior duo attracting Division I attention says Thomas Ranson

School’s been out for almost a month.

High school students are beginning to register for the upcoming sports season, which doesn’t start until August. But a couple of Fallon seniors are making some waves this summer in deciding their future after high school next year.

Sean McCormick and Jared Dooley are creating buzz in the community, receiving several Division I offers to continue to their football career at the next level.

Dooley, who was a first team selection last fall and won his first state wrestling title in the winter, already has been offered by five Division I schools, including Nevada. All but one are from the Mountain West, including UNLV, San Diego State and Boise State. Cal has also offered to the successful lineman.

McCormick is starting to see the offers come in after receiving his first to the University of Idaho this month. McCormick was last year’s MVP in football, won his third state wrestling team in as many years and was a second-team selection in baseball. McCormick is the complete package and there hasn’t been a more dominant and balanced student-athlete since Josh Mauga more than a decade ago.

It’s no secret that Fallon has been able to produce many standouts at the collegiate and professional levels (look out for features on how these stars did last year in college). But, like any school in the region it seems, getting to the Division I level is a challenge. Fallon has seen several make recently, including Joe Pyle, T.J. Mauga, Whitney Skabelund and Tristen Thomson, but it’s an elusive club.

Ever since McCormick walked onto campus and was called up to varsity in time for the 2015 state championship, you knew this kid was special. He won a state title as a freshman, and going into his final season, he will be on a quest to join rare company in winning four state wrestling titles. If you haven’t seen him compete on the gridiron, however, this fall is your last chance as he and Dooley will lead a Greenwave team that could be favored to win the league.

Dooley’s story has been fun to see unfold.

He moved to Fallon three years ago and was an injury shy from winning the state wrestling title in 2017. Dooley was the best wrestler in the state before an injury in the championship bout had him limping and finishing second. Dooley, though, bounced back in the spring and turned into one of the region’s best throwers in shot put and discus. He stepped up in his junior season, becoming one of the best linemen in the state and then won his first state wrestling title after dominating the region all season.

Dooley and McCormick are just a couple of the many student-athletes who are looking to continue their athletic career after high school. Year after year, the Greenwave is well represented all over the country, and this duo will be no exception.

Signing day for the Greenwave can’t come soon enough.
