Prep Roundup: Carson High baseball splits

The Carson High baseball team split two games Friday on the second day of the Mike Bearman Tournament at CHS.

Carson started the day with an 9-5 win over Central Catholic before dropping an 11-1, five-inning decision to Spanish Springs.

Carson pounded out 12 hits in the opener as they took an 8-1 lead before Central Catholic scored four runs in the fifth inning. Carson’s Jared Barnard was strong on the mound, throwing six innings of four-hit ball. Carson made two errors as Barnard gave up five runs, one earned. Avery Powell pitched the seventh, striking out two.

Abel Carter had four RBIs and three hits. Barnard helped himself with three hits and an RBI. Landon Truesdale had two hits and an RBI.

Against Spanish Springs, five Carson errors were the undoing of the Senators. Carson pitchers also gave up nine walks in five innings. The offense managed five hits with Truesdale collecting two and the team’s only RBI.

Carson is 2-1. The Senators continue play today in the tournament with games against Douglas (12:30 p.m.) and Fernley (3 p.m.) at Carson High.

Sierra Lutheran sweeps

The Falcons opened the season with wins over Coleville and Big Pine.

Sierra Lutheran stopped Coleville, 5-1, in four innings, and followed that up with an 11-1 win over Big Pine.

“The kids had some pre-game jitters since it was our first time hitting the field this year,” said Brandon Neal, assistant coach. “Overall we looked solid. Our pitching was dominant and our hitting came through in the second game.

“We do need to tighten up our defense and limit the throwing errors, since that cost us both of our runs today.”

Alex Bernhard keyed a three-run third against Coleville with an RBI double to left-centerfield. Zak Houghton and Michael Davis combined for seven strikeouts.

Against Big Pine, the Falcons scored eight in the second inning. Seth Houghton keyed the surge with a three-run double.

Bernhard and Austin Stone combined for five strikeouts.

Dayton wins twice

YERINGTON — The Dust Devils had two wins at the Yerington Tournament.

The Dust Devils opened with a 9-0 win over Yerington, and followed that up with a 12-1 win over West Wendover.

Trevor Burrows struck out seven in four innings against the Lions, and he helped his own cause with two hits and four RBI. Isaac Von Schoff, Zach Woitas and Micah Woodruff all had two hits.

Against West Wendover, Dayton scored nine in the fourth en route to the four-inning win. Burrows had a triple, Jake Madsen a single and Woitas had a double to key the uprising

Daniel Hastings picked up the win, allowing just two hits.

SOFTBALL

Senators lose twice

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Bad starts paved the way for two more Carson losses at the Elk Grove TOC.

In a 10-4 loss to Bella Vista, the Senators allowed seven runs in the first two innings, and in a 5-1 loss to Casa Roble, Carson gave up all five in the first.

Against Bella Vista, Carson scored all four of its runs in the third, as Amaya Mendeguia had a single and Jailene Salciedo had a double. Salciedo and Kedre Luschar each had two hits.

Carson was held to four hits by two Casa Roble pitchers. Salciedo, Kailee Luschar, Kedre Luschar and Nicole Brown had a hit apiece.
