Prep Roundup: Reno tops Carson High baseball team

RENO — There is no quit in the Carson Senators, and they proved that in their league opener against Reno.

Carson scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t quite enough, as Reno emerged with a 7-5 win Tuesday afternoon.

“I like that we didn’t quit,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said. “The guys continued to fight no matter what adversity we face. I thought Ben (Nelson) did a fantastic job. He made two mistakes, and they capitalized on them both — a change-up that got up for a two-run double and then the homer. It was a handful of plays, and that is the way it always is when we play Reno.”

The change-up Manoukian referred to came in the bottom of the fourth after Carson had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the inning on Teigen Key’s first high school homer.

“It was a high fastball,” Key said.

“I’m happy for Teigen,” Manoukian said. “He’s been working hard. He put a good swing on it.”

John Kane hit a one-out single, and Lane Oliphant followed with a ball to second that Delsin Roberts had to leave his feet to keep in front of him. Instead of holding the ball and giving Oliphant an infield single, he tried to make a play and threw wildly. Kane got all the way around to third and Oliphant reached second. After a strikeout, Garrett Damico doubled to put the Huskies ahead 3-2.

Carson had a chance to tie or go ahead in the fifth. Freshman Kobe Morgan singled to center and Abel Carter was hit by a pitch. Reno starter Brent Thomas exited in favor of Sawyer Jaksick. Landon Truesdale moved the runners to second and third with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. Kahle Good was walked intentionally, loading the bases. Jaksick came up big, retiring Colby Zemp and Jared Barnard on called third strikes to get out of the jam.

Jaksick helped his own cause with a lead-off homer to make it 4-2. Avery Powell came on and allowed three runs on a bases-loaded double by Kaden Hogan to make it 7-2.

“I thought it was foul, I truthfully did,” Key said.

Carter started the seventh-inning uprising with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. A single by Good, a double by Zemp and a single by Barnard cut the deficit to 7-5, Jaksick struck out the next hitter to end the game.

SWIMMING

Carson boys win 3

The Carson boys swimmers topped Bishop Manogue, 153-143, overpowered Hug, 213-7, and topped Reno, 165-102, to start the 4A season at Carson Aquatic Center.

Against Manogue, Brett Kolb won the 200 free in 1:50.78 and the 500 free in 5:11.88, and Reese Canfield won the 50 free in 23.10 and Carlos Torres took the 100 breast in 1:10.94.

Against Reno, Canfield won the 100 fly in 57.03 and Alexander Gutierrez won the 100 back in 1:02.46. Oscar Torrecillas won the 100 free against Hug and Juan Brena Gutierrez won the 200 IM in 2:16.51.

The Carson High girls swim team opened the season with wins over Bishop Manogue and Hug and a loss against Reno.

Carson topped Manogue 155-117 and Hug 211-19 and lost to Reno 192-110.

Mallory Hart was a double winner against Manogue, taking the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.69 and the 200 IM in 2:21.22. Gigi Hurst won the 100 back in 1:13.28 and Josie Vaughn won the 100 free in 1:01.69.

Against Hug, Leandra Blake won the 200 free in 2:08.90 and the 200 IM in 2:33.97. Nicole Van Geel won the 100 fly (1:06.78) and the 50 free (26.87). Hannah Presley won the 500 free in 5:53.94, Morgan Nelson captured the 100 free in 1:04.19, Blake Presley won the 200 in 1:51.12, Karina Novoa took the 100 back in 1:14.29 and Juliet Kahue grabbed the 100 breast in 1:25.19.

Against Reno, Carson didn’t have a first-place finisher. Hannah Presley, Blake Presley and Novoa all had seconds in their respective events.

TRACK

CHS opens at Galena

RENO — The Carson girls tied Galena in Saturday’s meet, and the boys were fourth.

Ashley Britt was a double winner, grabbing the 100 hurdles in 18.6 and the 400 in 66.92. She was second in the 300 hurdles at 52.82. Rheanna Jackson won the 3200 in 12:12.48, Abigail Pradere took the 800 in 2:24.86. Alyssa Rowe won the shot with a heave of 32-11. Taryn Encinas won the high jump at 4-6.

Ben Granados was a double winner for the boys, taking the 100 in 11.4 and the 200 in 23.86. He was only the Carson athlete to win an individual event.

GOLF

CHS takes third

RENO — Carson High’s golf team finished third in the first Sierra League tournament at Lakeridge on Monday.

In a change, each team counts just four players, and only three teams go to regionals.

“There’s just too much talent on Manogue and Galena to challenge them, so our goal is to be the No. 3 team,” coach Wade Greenlee said. “Zander Smokey had a good day playing pretty solid on the front and back. We’ll need Ethan Lepire and Ty Evans to play better, and with their talent I expect better scores next week at Wolf Run.

“Being seniors I expect them to rise to the challenge. I also expect Nick Brown to be in the 90s. The greens were pretty fast today and we just weren’t used to that. The greens at Eagle Valley are quite a bit slower so the boys had too many three and even four putts. We squandered about 30 shots just around the greens.”

Smokey shot 86 and finished 12th. Ethan Lepire was 14th at 91, Ty Evans and Nick Brown tied for 19th at 104.
