Prep Roundup: Carson High track sends 14 to finals

NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect 14 Carson High athletes, not 12, qualified for the Northern 4A finals.

SPARKS — Carson High qualified 14 individuals and six relay squads for next weekend’s Northern 4A finals.

Ben Granados (100 and 200), Chance Smith (high jump), Tanner Kalicki (triple jump), Gabe Gabica and John Dawson Breuer (pole vault), Taryn Encinas (high jump), Hunter Rauh (800), Abigail Pradere (800 and 1600), Ashley Britt (300 hurdles), Alyssa Rowe (shot put), Blanca Sosa (800), Makenzie McDaniel (discus), Amanda Schulz (discus) and Rheanna Jackson (3200) qualified from Saturday’s trials at Reed High School.

The Senators’ boys 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 relay squads moved on, and the CHS girls qualified in the 800, 1600 and 3200 relay events.

“We did a heck of a job,” Carson’s first-year head coach Steve Nelms said. “We are really coming on. Pradere ran great times and Ben (Granados) was flying. Taryn Encinas had a PR and so did Tanner. and Hunter ran smart races (800 and 1600 relay).”

Pradere ran a 2:20.56 in the 800, beating Manogue’s Rosie Linkus by nearly three seconds. She ran a season-best 5:07.12 in the 1600 which was the fastest time in either league.

Granados ran a PR of 22.81 in the 200 and was the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 100 at 11.37. Encinas, who just learned to high jump this year, PRd at 4-8 and just slipped in. Three other jumpers cleared 4-8. Kalicki had a PR at 44-0 1/2 which was the second-best among the jumpers from two leagues. Another PR was turned in by Alyssa Rowe, who threw 35-8 to nab the second automatic qualifying spot among Sierra throwers. Smith also registered a PR with a 5-8 effort.

Britt (48.80) and Jackson (12:10.83) were both fourth among Sierra runners, but easily qualified to move on. Gabica continued to vault well, clearing 12-6. Breuer cleared 12-feet for a PR. Rauh ran a 2:04.36 which was fourth-fastest on the day. He will have to move up one spot next weekend to make state.

Dayton at Lowry Invitational

WINNEMUCCA — Ashley Mason won two events to lead Dayton to a fourth-place finish at Saturday’s Lowry Invite.

Mason won the long jump at 16-10 and the triple jump at 35-4. Her twin sister, Rebecca, had a PR of 62.01 in the 400 en route to a second-place finish and she was third in the high jump at 4-10. Sydney Strickler was fourth in the 100 (13.68) and 200 (27.67). Grace Wells PR’d in the 300 hurdles with a 52.93 en route to fourth place.

The boys finished seventh. Jeffrey Walker won the pole vault at 12-6 and David Delfin PR’d and finished first in the discus with a throw of 142-6. Austin Lunz had a PR of 39-11 in the shot put en route to a fourth-place finish. Michael Rhoades was fourth in the triple jump.

BASEBALL

Dayton, Fallon split

DAYTON — Dayton closed out the regular season with a doubleheader split against Fallon on Saturday.

Dayton won the opener 3-2, but Fallon bounced back with a 4-3 win in the second game.

In the opener, Isaac Von Schoff gave up two in the third, and shut down the Greenwave the rest of the way. His teammates bailed him out with three in the fifth for the win. Von Schoff worked 6.2 innings before giving way to Trevor Burrows, who got the final out.

Daniel Hastings walked with two outs to start the wining rally in the fifth. Colin Winebarger followed with a single to send Hastings to second. An error allowed Hastings to score and Zach Woitas followed with the game-winning hit, a two-run double.

Dayton was out-hit, 4-3, in the game. Jake Madson had Dayton’s only other hit. Sean McCormick led Fallon with two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the third, but Fallon came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth and two in the top of the seventh. McCormick had a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Jake Madson took the loss, allowing three earned runs and seven hits. He fanned three and walked just one in going the distance.

McCormick led Fallon at the plate, going 3-for-4. Madson and Burrows each went 2-for-4. Burrows had and RBI as did Von Schoff.

SOFTBALL

Fallon sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — The Dust Devils managed just nine total hits in getting swept by Fallon, 13-0 and 13-3, Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Faith Cornmesser worked the first four for Fallon, blanking Dayton on three hits before leaving. She struck out eight and walked two.

The first game was scoreless until the Greenwave scored four in the third and three in the fourth to take control.

Alex Jarrett homered twice and doubled en route to a 5-RBI game. Stacey Kait went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and Caitlyn Welch went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Shelby Schultz also had two hits.

Tamia Powell, Julie Rogacs and Shay Thompson all singled in the loss.

In the second game, Fallon scored two in the first and eight in the second en route to a mercy rule victory.

Cornmesser was the hitting star, with a double, three singles and an RBI. Schultz went 3-for-4 and Welch went 2-for-5. Jarrett had a hit and two RBI.

Powell had a homer and single and Rogacs added a double and single for Dayton.

Five Dayton errors led to 10 Fallon runs.
