RENO — Three games in one day. It was simply too much.

After dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Spanish Springs on Friday morning, the Carson Senators drilled Damonte Ranch before being routed by Bishop Manogue, 9-1, Friday afternoon at Manogue.

The 1-2 effort spelled the end of a great season for the Senators, who finished 20-14, up from nine wins in 2017.

“At the start of the season, I thought we had a team good enough to go deep in the playoffs,” said first-year Carson head coach Carlos Mendeguia, who loses two players to graduation. “Our goal is to go deep in the playoffs next year; play on Saturday.

“Three games in one day. Manogue faced the same thing. The girls didn’t have the same emotion and intensity (that they had earlier).”

Girls who play travel ball often have to play three pool games, but there is usually a game off. On Friday, Carson played three straight games with no break.

The day started with the 2-1 loss, as Tyra Clary outdueled Jailene Salciedo. Clary fanned eight and scattered six hits. Salciedo allowed seven hits and struck out two.

The Senators took a 1-0 lead in the first on Kedre Luschar’s run-scoring single. Aubrey Parks knotted the game in the fourth. Rylee Retzer won it in the fifth with a solo homer.

“We went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams and best pitchers in Northern Nevada,” Mendeguia said. “We came out ready to play.”

Kedre Luschar singled twice, Kailee Luschar added a double, and Cam Quilling and Lauren Lemburg each had a single.

The game against Damonte Ranch was over after the Senators scored five in the first and three in the second. Carson led 9-0, and then Mendeguia opted to rest Salciedo the rest of the game. Freshman Taylor Murphy allowed five runs and six hits in the final three innings.

“I was a little worried about Damonte,” Mendeguia said. “They hit the ball well, but we got up 8-0 on them and we decided to rest Jailene to give her a breather because she was going to have to pitch the next game.”

The big blow in the first was a two-out, 3-run homer by Quilling, her second round-tripper in as many days. All five runs were unearned thanks to two Damonte Ranch errors.

Salciedo helped herself with three runs in the second on a homer by Salciedo to make it 8-0. Cooley singled in a run in the fourth and Amaya Mendeguia did likewise in the sixth.

Cooley went 4-for-4, Quilling went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Salciedo went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Kedre Luschar went 2-for-4.

Manogue, coming off a mercy rule win in an elimination game against Reno, overcame a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the first and three in the second.

The Senators managed just six hits off Hannah Blas, who threw 84 pitches, 55 for strikes. Kedre Luschar had two hits, Kailee Luschar, Quilling, Lemburg and Nicole Brown added a hit each. Carson had five errors, leading to five unearned runs.

Douglas still alive

RENO — A pair of three-run homers in the second inning, both by players hitting No. 8 in the order, were the difference for Douglas on Friday afternoon at the Northern 4A Region Tournament in Reno.

For better and for worse.

Kettja Bennett slammed a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Tigers on top to stay en route to a 6-1 win against tournament-host Bishop Manogue. In the winner’s bracket final, however, Rylee Retzer’s three-run homer helped send top-seeded Spanish Springs to a 4-3 win over Douglas.

By winning, Spanish Springs (25-9) advanced to the championship round on Saturday and clinched a berth in the 4A state tournament next week, also at Manogue.

Douglas (23-10-1) will face Manogue (25-10) at 10 a.m. on the Miners’ home field in an elimination game to determine the other finalist. The first championship round game is scheduled for noon (if necessary, the second game would start at 2).

Down 1-0 in the home half of the second, the Cougars rallied as Amadori Anderson singled to left, Hunter Travers reached on an infield hit and Retzer drove a 2-1 pitch to left field for a homer.

Douglas pulled to within 3-2 in the fifth inning when Kendal Moore hit a two-out line drive solo homer to center field.

Spanish Springs answered in the bottom half of the inning as Alysa Micone hit a leadoff double and scored when pitcher Tyra Clary helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single to left field.

Douglas scored once to pull within 4-3 in the sixth when Jasmine McNinch was hit by a 1-2 pitch, advanced on Casey Peck’s single and scored when Alyssa Smokey hit a single to right. The Tigers missed an opportunity to regain the lead, however, as Amanda Hoffman singled to load the bases before Clary retired the side on a ground ball to Savannah Martin at second base.

Deztiny Vaughan pitched 4.2 innings, allowed four runs on eight hits to go with two strikeouts and no walks.

Clary pitched the seven-inning distance, allowed three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

In the 6-1 win against Manohue. Bennett and Alyssa Smokey hit home runs and Hoffman pitched a three-hitter.

Bennett’s three-run homer in the second inning erased a 1-0 deficit and gave the Tigers a lead they never relinquished and Smokey added a solo homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.

That was more than ample support as Hoffman had eight strikeouts and two walks as part of her complete game performance. The senior right-hander had six strikeouts to end innings and she received further support from a defense that turned double plays to end Manogue rallies in the third and fourth innings.

Bennett hit 3-for-4 while Peck, Smokey and Hoffman added two hits each as the Tigers collected nine of their 10 hits from the 5-through-8 spots in the order.

Dayton splits, eliminated

FALLON — The Dust Devils split two more games at the 3A softball tournament, and one of the best seasons in recent memory ended with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Lowry.

Dayton led 4-0 after scoring two in the first and two in the fourth, but yielded five in the bottom of the seventh.

A walk and sacrifice put runners on second and third. Tamia Powell drove in a run on an infield out. A misplayed fly ball gave Dayton its second run of the inning. A double steal and a Powell hit made it 4-0.

Kelcy Cooper started Lowry’s big rally when she tripled in two runs. Sydney Connors singled in a run to make it 4-3, and the Bucks’ Bailey Sapien singled home two runs to end Dayton’s season.

Aleea McGill-Howe, Alura Greenwalt, Amanda Woitas and Powell had a hit each for Dayton.

Earlier in the day, Dayton downed Spring Creek to stay alive in the tourney.

“We had a great season,” coach Dusti Houk said. “I’m so proud of the girls.”
