Prep Roundup: Carson High cross country teams 3rd

Zachary Sever (17:53), Ethan Byasse (17:56) and Hunter Rauh (17:58) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively for the Carson High boys cross country team in the Northern 4A Sierra League meet at Rancho San Rafael on Friday.

Carson finished third with 63 points. Galena won with 43. Douglas was second with 58. The league title was Galena’s third in a row.

Walker MacKenzie (23rd in 19:26) and Jakob Heller (25th in 19:28) rounded out the Carson scorers. Douglas’ Matthew Kruse (9th in 18:17), Celime Garcia (10th in 18:32) and Patrick Voss (11th in 18:34) lead the Tigers. Remington Hill-Holeman was 13th in 18:39 and Calvin Doerr was 15th in 18:42 for the Tigers. Galena’s Matthew Gordon won the meet in 17:11.

On the girl’s side, Damonte Ranch edged Douglas, 36-33. Carson was third with 88 points.

Leading the Senators was Hannah Kaiser (5th in 21:44). Freshmen Kaitlin Schulze and Claire Cartier placed 20th and 22nd with respective times of 24:58 and 25:12, Hailey Ponzoch was 25th in 25:41 and Ginger Cullom 30th in 27:01.

Carley Legenbauer won the race in 20:34 for Damonte Ranch. Douglas’ Maya Smith was third (20:54), she was followed by Addison Gregory (6th in 22:27), Zoe Brown (8th in 22:47), Audrey Keasling (9th in 22:49) and Imogene Tierney (10th in 22:50).

The Northern 4A Region Championships will be this Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno, followed by the state meet on Nov. 3 in Boulder City.

Carson JV boys runners take second

Carson High’s boys cross country team ran to second place on Tuesday at the Spanish Springs JV Invitational. It was a rewarding end to a season of team and personal improvements.

There were many personal records and the team moved up from a fifth place finish at the Reed Invitational a month ago.

The Senators finished as the runner-up in the 12-team field with 91 points. Douglas packed its five scoring runners in the top 12 to win the title with 32 points.

Douglas sophomore Chad Maricich won the race, covering the 3.1-mile course at Golden Eagle Park in 18:33.

Jacob Crossman led Carson, as the sophomore placed sixth in 19:10, a personal best time at altitude. Andrew Ingram placed 16th in a lifetime best 19:54, Gabe Crossman 19th in 20:13, Cody Jackson 21st in 20:18 and Kyle Holloway 29th in a personal best 20:38.

Non-scoring runners included Asher Koch in 21:36, Isaac Harrison 21:42, Ethan Baulerle 22:06, Enrique Lemus 22:24 (a PR by 22 seconds) PR 22 sec, Jeremiah Favero 22:30 (a PR by 5 minutes), and Eduardo Hernandez 23:52 (a PR by 2:43).

Carson finished fifth in the girls team race with 125 points. Sarai Jauregui-Rivas placed 19th in 26:02, an 8 minute improvement for the season. Emily Richardson was 28th in 26:57, Ella Wick 39th in 28:32, Kora Ashton 45th in a PR of 29:24, a five-minute improvement, Gianna Johnson 48th in 29:36 and Jardeh Lopez 51st in 29:47.

Douglas also won the girls team title with 32 points.

CHS volleyball keeps playoff hopes alive

The Carson High volleyball team did what it needed to do Thursday: Win.

The Senators had a senior night victory against Wooster (3-1). The victory sets up another must-win Tuesday night at Douglas High School. The winner of the rivalry match will earn a trip to the Northern 4A playoffs. The match will start at 6 p.m.

Against Wooster, the Senators leaned on their senior leader: Abby Pradere.

In the opening game, the serving of Pradere and fellow senior Shea DeJoseph got the Senators off to a 6-2 start. Pradere would have a nice tip to give Carson a 12-7 lead. She then would serve to give the Senators a 16-7 lead. Up 24-18, Pradere would close out the game with a nice dig that allowed the Senators to secure game point.

“Overall, a good night,” coach Robert Maw said. “I told the girls we have two playoff games before we go to Reno for playoffs. It is playoff mentality, it is one and done.”

In game two, Pradere got the Senators off to a 3-0 start in a game that saw the Senators run out to a 12-3 lead. Pradere and DeJoseph had a hand in the final four points, with Pradere serving an ace on game point.

In game three, Carson switched up its rotation as Maw was getting some of his younger players more playing time. Wooster would take advantage turning a 16-14 deficit into a 21-16 lead en route to a 25-20 win. DeJoseph served as Carson cut the lead to 22-20 but Wooster wouldn’t go away.

In the fourth game, Carson made sure its playoff chances remained alive running out to a 13-4 and then 16-5 lead. Wooster would never get closer than 11 the rest of the way.

“We have been working on aggressive serving a lot and it really paid off tonight,” Maw said.

Pradere had four aces, five kills, 34 assists and eight digs; senior Audrey Breeding had six kills and three blocks; Cami Larkin had a team-high 10 kills; Camille Kordonowy had five digs; Camryn Quilling had six kills; Carissa Willey had eight kills; Raymie Brooks had four aces; and DeJoseph had two aces and six kills.

Carson is at 18-10 overall and 3-6 in Sierra League play. Douglas beat Carson earlier this year in five games. If Carson were to lose, Douglas would get the playoff spot holding the tiebreaker over Carson.
