Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels is a weekly feature in the Appeal’s Opinion pages in which the Appeal gives Silver Dollars to those who deserve recognition and occasionally a Wooden Nickel to those who deserve criticism.
SILVER DOLLAR: To 87-year-old Florence Phillips, founder and co-director of the ESL In-Home Program, for being honored by CNN as this past week’s CNN Hero. In addition to free language tutoring services, the ESL In-Home Program provides workplace communication, computer literacy, GED preparation, and citizenship study regardless of sex, age, race, religion or national or ethnic origin, or physical disabilities. Phillips is a true Hometown Hero.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Western Nevada College for being selected by the EC-Council as the 2018 Academic Innovator of the Year Award recipient for lasting impacts on its students’ cybersecurity education and local communities. WNC will be presented this award at the upcoming EC-Council 2018 Partner Awards on Sept. 12 in Atlanta. Also to CTE Director Georgia White, WNC professor Dave Riske, WNC’s advisory board and the students for making the award happen.
