Carson City’s department directors recently gathered for a Leadership Retreat.
The retreat provides staff the opportunity to discuss departmental challenges, supports an open dialog, identifies the needs of each department and reinforces relationships between city professionals.
The Leadership Retreat featured discussions on leadership and strategic planning by Mat Sinclair, president of the Nevada Discovery Museum, trauma response by Gabrielle Totton, executive director of the Trauma Intervention Program of Northern Nevada, Inc., and on future federal grant opportunities by Honorable Jon Porter and members of his firm, Porter Group Government & Business Solutions.
City Manager Nancy Paulson said “it’s important to focus on sharpening our skills and seek ways to be more effective so that we can be successful in carrying out the city’s goals and objectives.”
Sessions throughout the day included workshops, mentoring, and comprehensive planning. Public outreach to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of municipal issues was a common area of improvement shared between departments. In addition, planning ahead for crisis situations and minimizing financial impacts by anticipating economic inconsistencies.
Leadership Retreat is designed to inspire the collaborative spirit among department directors, cultivate ideas and develop common organizational goals.
