Prep Roundup: Sierra Lutheran football rolls

The Sierra Lutheran football team rolled to a 20-0 win over Coleville on Saturday.

Shawn Emm scored in the first quarter as the Falcons led 7-0 at halftime.

John Miles kicked two field goals and Caleb Contreras returned an interception for Sierra Lutheran for the final margin.

“Defense played great; everyone stuck to their jobs,” defensive coordinator Brandon Neal said.

“Our goal was to play four complete quarters, and we did just that,” Sierra Lutheran coach Del Bugg said. “Defense stepped up, and they played really hard down the stretch; holding someone to zero points is never easy.”

Dayton boys soccer wins

Dayton defeated Battle Mountain, 1-0, at home on Saturday for its first shutout of the season.

Dayton had numerous scoring chances, eventually breaking through on Jacob Duran’s goal.

Sophomore Lance Peterson had an outstanding game with five shots, including one in which he almost scored on a header off of a corner kick.

Defenders Peter Miklich, Moritz Rau, Zane Westom and Michael Roades posted the shutout. The Dust Devils are now 2-2 in league.

Marchegger wins again

Jared Marchegger won the Fernley Roadhill Invitational on Friday for the Sierra Lutheran boys cross country team, finishing the 3.1 mile course in 18 minutes, 24 seconds.

The Falcons had a 1-2 finish as Teagan Hansen took second in 18:39.

For Sierra Lutheran’s girls, Emily McNeely took third in 22:48 and Taylor Davidson was 12th in 26:19.

Other results for the boys were: Andreas Gilson, 21st, 21:18; Aaron Waite, 37th, 22:02; Jacob Tack, 61st, 23;49; William Webster, 67th, 24:45.

“This 3.1 miles course felt hot and desert dry. It was a challenge and a good experience for all,” Sierra Lutheran coach Robin Williams said.

Senators prepare for Stanford Invitational

Fast times will be the primary goal on Saturday when Carson High cross country runners step to the starting line Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.

The prestigious event draws athletes from around the West Coast. The Senators view this as a step in their preparation leading to the Northern 4A Region Championships next month.

Carson’s boys team is scheduled to run in the Division 1 race at 11 a.m. Coach Pete Sinnott pointed out that the Senators are the only Northern Nevada team entered in that division, although the region will be well represented in other divisions and on the same course.

“This is a chance to see where we rank with the top California schools and, to see how our times stand with other Nevada teams competing in the Invitational,” Sinnott said. “This is going to be a real good indication of where we’re at.”

Sinnott said the boys team will be at full strength for the first time this season. He said the goal is for all seven to finish the 5-kilometer course within one minute of each other. Furthermore, the drop from altitude to run at sea level provides an opportunity to run faster times, he added

“Our girls lead by Hanna Kaiser are very young and inexperienced. This meet will be a lot like when a baby bird leaves the nest. You better start flapping pretty fast. Pretty exciting. The kids are getting stronger each week and this event will give them the opportunity to challenge themselves,” Sinnott said. “Looking for Hannah to be under 20 minutes and the rest under 22.

“On a good day, I think our boys can all run under 17 minutes,” Sinnott said. “If we can do that, we can be competitive in all of our Nevada meets.”

CHS girls tennis comeback falls short

Carson almost pulled off the comeback but lost to Damonte Ranch, 10-8, on Tuesday. The Senators trailed 9-3 after two rounds.

Sydney Lloyd and Becca Trejo won 6-4 in doubles for Carson’s only first-round win as CHS trailed 5-1 after the first round. Jennifer Artz won 6-1 and Lloyd and Trejo won 7-6, 7-3 in doubles in the second round.

In the third round, Artz won 6-0, Rachel Fenzke won 6-3 and Shea Dunn won 6-3 in singles and in doubles Lloyd and Trejo finished off their sweep with a 6-4 win and Hailee Bauman and Lola Works won 6-4 for the Senators.
