The Popcorn Stand: My obsession with Florida Man continues

Add to the list Florida Man to things such as Nicolas Cage and weird world records that I’m obsessed with. Again Florida Man — a term to describe people from Florida who do some pretty weird things — I think would be more accurately be referred to as Anywhere Man. But Florida Man continues to grab the headlines. In my last Popcorn Stand I wrote about a guy from Florida who faked a robbery in an attempt to avoid working his shift. Now the latest Florida Man I’m obsessed with evidently bought an island for $8 million only a week later try to steal $300 from Kmart. The Key West Police Department arrested 59-year-old Andrew Lippi on a felony charge of grand theft of $300. The department says between March 30 and April 5 Lippi stole $300.59 worth of goods from a local Kmart, including a Keurig coffeemaker, a Hamilton Beach coffeemaker, eight light bulbs and a bed skirt, according to the Miami Herald. Who knows why this Florida Man needed two coffeemakers? It gets better. Lippi stole these items only to return the orignal packages with other products inside. The box with the $165 Keurig coffeemaker for instance had a basketball returned inside. The box with the Hamilton Beach coffeemaker was returned with a used coffee maker in it. Now that makes more sense. Florida Man also apparently doesn’t know how to change a light bulb. When asked about the light bulbs, Lippi said he returned the light bulbs because he paid too much money for them and didn’t know how they were switched. For his part, Lippi said he isn’t stealing anything, he’s just involved in a “commercial dispute,” whatever that means. The arrest came a week after Lippi bought Thompson Island off Key West for $8 million. Lippi also owns the “Real World” resort used for the 17th season of the MTV Series. All I’ve got to say is Florida Man’s Real World is a Weird World. Hey, that could be a reality series. The Weird World of Florida Man. — Charles Whisnand
