It was an interesting race weekend last week, and this week should prove no less fascinating. Denny Hamlin joined his Monster Energy Cup teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. in the four-win club, and Will Power kept his NTT IndyCar series streak of 13 years with at least one season win alive. And Matt DiBenedetto proved that he deserves a good ride, taking a 2018 JGR chassis to a second-place finish after finding out he’ll be losing his job at season’s end. Finally, after another big crash, fortunately with no major injuries, there are questions about whether IndyCar should continue to race at Pocono.

DENVER — Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders and 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo each made a triumphant return to action Monday night when the San Francisco 49ers’ backups engineered a 24-15 preseason win over the Denver Broncos. Is Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers overrated, overpaid and overhyped? Well, we will likely find out this year. If he stays healthy. Tom Brady’s former backup will turn 28 years old in early November. This is his sixth year in the NFL and he has started just 10 games and thrown for just 17 touchdowns and 2,968 yards in his career. He’s never thrown a pass in a playoff game. The most games he has started in a season is five (2017). And he makes just under $30 million a year.

My racing jobs have included turn marshal, communicator, starter, driver, pit crew, reporter, publicist, and announcer. Currently I’m writing this column for the Appeal and announcing at Fernley 95A Speedway.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd showed flashes in the exhibition opener of the ability that led the San Francisco 49ers to take the two receivers on the second day of this year’s NFL draft. Samuel provided some big plays down the field and Hurd caught two touchdown passes as both rookies make their case for getting significant playing time when the regular season starts.
