Carson’s Remer wins regional title

Carson High’s David Remer won the regional title in wrestling at the Northern 4A Championships on Saturday at Hug High.

Remer won the title at 182 pounds when he beat Reed’s Zachary Johnson 4-2 in the finals. Alex Wells also qualified for state for Carson when he finished third at 152 pounds. The top three wrestlers in each weight qualified for state to be held next Friday and Saturday at Winnemucca.

Carson finished fifth as a team with 88 points. Spanish Springs won the regional title with 247.5 points and was followed by Reed (201), Manogue (119), McQueen (98.5) and Carson. Damonte Ranch finished sixth with 71 points and Douglas was seventh with 69 points.

Douglas High’s Chad Singer finished second at 195 pounds to qualify for state for the Tigers.

Remer trailed 2-0 against Johnson in the first period but came back to score an escape and a takedown in the second period to take a 4-2 lead and then made the lead stand up.

Well lost in the semifinals to Reed’s Christian Richer 8-5 but came back to pin Manogue’s Max Kiker and then edged Spanish Springs’ Logan Blocher 4-3 in the third place match.

Carson had three other wrestlers just miss qualifying for state by finishing fourth. Ariel Vega at 106, Luis Mayoral at 120 and Max Harris at 132 all finished fourth.

Singer was pinned in the finals by one of the state’s best wrestlers, Colby Preston. Douglas also had three wrestlers who finished fourth and just fell short of qualifying for state. Jaden Blanchard at 126, Byron Fair at 145 and Gabriel Foster at 220 all finished fourth.
