SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City teachers make the grade

Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels is a weekly feature in the Appeal’s Opinion pages in which the Appeal gives Silver Dollars to those who deserve recognition and occasionally a Wooden Nickel to those who deserve criticism.

SILVER DOLLAR: To three more Carson City School District teachers for earning certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. The NBPTS is widely considered to be the highest professional recognition for educators. The teachers earning certification are Nicolas Jacques, NBCT for Music in Early Adolescent to Young Adult, and Carson Middle School Director of Bands and Conductor of Community Band; Amy Jensen, NBCT as a Middle Childhood Generalist, master’s in teaching, fifth grade teacher and GATE coordinator at Bordewich Bray Elementary; and Joanna Kaiser, NBCT in Literacy: Reading and Language Arts (ages 3-12), masters in literacy studies and GATE implementation specialist.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Children’s Museum for receiving a $10,000 grant from The E.L. Cord Foundation.

SILVER DOLLAR: While the Fremont Cannon is still red, we must still congratulate the University of Nevada basketball team for its 87-70 win over UNLV.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Click Bond CEO Karl G. Hutter for being named to the National Association of Manufacturers Executive Committee of Board of Directors.

WOODEN NICKEL: To the Department of Energy for secretly shipping weapons-grade plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada.
