John Everett Lewis, known to his friends as “Jack”, age 92, died Saturday, January 12, 2019 at The Lodge Assisted Living Care Community in Carson City, NV of natural causes.


Jack leaves his wife of 73 years, Sally Lewis, his daughter Linda Backvall of San Andreas, CA and his son Kenneth (Joe) Lewis of Dayton NV. He also leaves three grandchildren; Bryan Lewis, Amanda Lewis, and Martin Lewis and five great grandchildren; Eddie, Andrew, Joe, Hannah, and Ava. His namesake great grandson “Jack” preceded him death


Jack was born February 7, 1926 in Selma, CA to Norma and Orville Lewis. He attended high school in Stockton, CA until at the age of 17 Jack joined the U.S. Navy and served proudly in the South Pacific during WWII, after which he was honorably discharged from the Navy in1947 at the age of 21. He received the WWII Victory Medal, while in the Philippines.


Jack married his childhood sweetheart Sally in March 1948 and for a short period of time they lived in Oregon where their daughter was born in 1951. They subsequently moved to Calaveras County, CA in 1952 where their son was born in 1956.


During his 34 years in Calaveras County, Jack enjoyed 20 years of employment with Nelson Sand and Gravel and worked for the Calaveras Unified School District for a time. He enjoyed raising cattle and watching his favorite football team, the Calaveras Redskins.


After retirement in 1986, Jack embarked on his lifetime dream of visiting all the corners of United States. He and wife Sally and sister-in-law Opal spent nine years traveling the U.S. in his fifth wheel making lots of new friends along the way. They later settled down in Apache Junction, AZ until they moved to Dayton NV to be close to family.
