Wave crowns 3 champions at Spring Creek

Different tournament, familiar results.

For the first time this month – and third time in the season – the Greenwave wrestling team crowned three tournament champions.

Seniors Sean McCormick (170) and Ben Dooley (285), and junior Tommy McCormick (152) each won their division at Saturday’s Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational.

“They’re closing in on the end of the season very strong which is expected, and if they continue to wrestle to their potential, they should have a state title in the next month,” Fallon coach Trevor de Braga said.

Fallon, which saw the rest of the team bounced in the first day of the tournament (Friday), finished 11th out of 29 teams that represented all four Nevada divisions and Idaho. Spring Creek won the tournament with a resounding 312 points over Minco, Idaho’s 180.5 and Lowry’s 162. Fallon finished with 110 points, one from tying Elko, as the Wave was the fourth-best 3A Northern team.

The tournament format, however, gave all wrestlers who didn’t make it past Friday another chance with Saturday’s “hard luck” tournament that offered a three-match minimum.

“The rest of the Greenwave got a ton of much-needed match time,” de Braga said. “The Kiwanis invite is a great tournament for us. They are put into pods and get a minimum of three matches. We are improving and mat time is key.”

Fallon has one more tournament remaining before league duals. De Braga will take his more experienced wrestlers to the CIT in Morro Bay, Calif., while the rest of the team will compete in Fernley on Saturday. Following league duals, which is used for seeding, is the regional tournament in Fernley. State is in Winnemucca Feb. 7-8.

“We’re not quite where we want to be but we are really coming around and it’s great to see,” de Braga said. “I hope we get our young guys on the podium in Fernley and I hope my experienced boys win titles at a very tough tournament.”

106: Lucas Prinz finished 0-2, including a 10-6 loss to Minico’s James Burr and a pin by North Valley’s Adrian Ruscetta. Isabella Leal was pinned in her only two matches.

120: Case Cornmesser quickly rebounded in the consolation to win his second match after losing 7-3 to Yerington’s Thorne Milligan. Cornmesser pinned Lowry’s Colton VonAspem but fell to Reno’s Jansen Mai in his third bout.

126: Josiah Rosario won his first bout, a first-period pin over Eureka’s Ivan Pickard, but dropped his next two, including falls to Lowry’s Taylor Corak and Caldwell’s Jose Gomez. Wyatt Hatch lost his only two after receiving a bye including a sudden victory when Minic’s Isaac Herrera won 4-2.

138:Luke Sorensen fell in his first match but pinned Galena’s Alex Monroe in the consolation before falling to Minco’s Sebastian Greco.

138: Drew Kramer opened with a fall over Douglas’ Jeffery Hayward but fell to Buhl’s Adam Mings in the third period of the second round. Kramer pinned North Valleys’ Jesus Trujillo in his next match but fell to Buhl’s David Tennant.

145: Cody Shelton dropped both his bouts, including a sudden victory (10-8) against Douglas’ Cameron Daniels before being pinned by Reed’s Lucca Budija.

Cody Shelton (1-3) place is unknown and scored 0.0 team points.

152: Tommy McCormick finished 4-0, including a 3-2 decision over Reed’s Christian Richer to win the weight class.

170: Sean McCormick finished 5-0, with all but his final bout being falls. McCormick decisioned Minico’s Tazyn Twiss, 9-3, to win the division.

285: Ben Dooley pinned all five of his opponents, including four in the first period. He pinned Pershing County’s Axel Gonzalez to win the division.
