Local roundup: Carson High softball falls to McQueen

A Northern 4A opener on a cold, windy day against arguably the region’s top pitcher with a nasty rising fastball: Not a good combination for the Carson High softball team.

McQueen pitcher Rylie Miller had the edge against Carson and she pitched the Lancers to a 4-2 win on Thursday at CHS, outdueling the Senators’ Jaliene Salciedo, who was also outstanding on the mound.

Miller struck out 16 while allowing four hits in her complete game effort. Salciedo allowed two earned runs on seven hits in her complete game effort.

“Rylie Miller is one of the best pitchers in the north if not the best pitcher in the north right now,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “Her riser was on. It’s a tough pitch to lay off. She did a good job of keeping us off balance. That was a tough opener facing Rylie Miller.”

Of the first 12 outs Miller recorded, 11 came by strikeout. The other out came on a pop out on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Carson still fought back to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth inning.

Miller hand’t allowed a hit until Camryn Quilling’s pop fly aided by the wind landed in the infield for a single in the fifth. Quilling eventually scored on Kailee Luschar’s single to tie the game 2-2. “It’s good how the girls battled back and responded,” Mendeguia said.

But then came the turning point of the game. Carson went on to have runners at second and third with one out but Miller struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.

McQueen went on to take a 4-2 lead on the strength of two hits and two errors in the sixth. “We just had some untimely errors,” Mendeguia said, “That was definitely the difference right there.”

The Lancers still had the bases loaded with one out after taking a 4-2 lead but Salciedo escaped the jam with the help of catcher Alex Salciedo, who picked off a runner at first. Salciedo went on to induce a comebacker to end the inning. Alex Salciedo also threw out two runners trying to steal in the game.

After an error, McQueen took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run in the first. “She really did settle down and did a good job after that,” said Mendeguia about Salciedo. “She’s our workhorse. She battles for us every game.”

Luschar, who had three stolen bases, manufactured a run to pull Carson to within 2-1 in the bottom of the first. She reached on an error and stole second. She then stole third and on the throwing error came home to score.

Bella Kordonowy and Kassidy Cooley also each had a hit for CHS.

Dayton 16, Truckee 0

Dayton rolled to the win at home on Friday. Amanda Woitas went 2-for-2 with a triple and was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and striking out five over three innings.

Also for Dayton, Marissa Hein doubled, Tamia Powell went 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBI, Caleigh Onstott had a hit and three RBI and Aleea McGill-Howe had a home run and three RBI.

BASEBALL

Galena 11, Carson 1

Galena scored five runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead on its way to the win on Thursday at Ron McNutt Field. Winning pitcher Brian Baker allowed one run on two hits while striking out 14 over six innings for Galena. Casey Martensen and Kahle Good each had a hit to account for Carson’s hits.

Lucas Bain, Cole Demosthenes, and Baker, all drove in runs during Galena’s five-run fourth inning. Aiden Elliott went 3-for-5 while Bain, Demosthenes and Baker all had two hits for the Grizzlies.

GOLF

CHS boys take third

The Carson High boys golf team placed third in its opening Sierra League tournament on Thursday at Reno’s Wolf Run. Galena won with a 303, Manogue was second with a 323, Carson was third with a 376, Douglas was fourth with a 392 and Damonte Ranch was fifth with a 409.

Lukas Taggert finished 13th to lead Carson with an 89. Also for CHS, Zander Smokey fired a 90, Daniel Escalante had a 98, Bradley Wiggins shot a 99, Nick Brown fired a 111 and Brandon Engels added a 114.

Galena’s Scott Rescigno and Manogue’s Jacob Zerby were the low score medalists as each shot a 74.
