Three other local golfers are in the running to make it to the State Championships. At press time heading into Tuesday’s final round at Wildcreek in Sparks, three local golfers have placed themselves in position to qualify for the State Championships at the Northern 4A Championships. Carson High’s Lukas Taggart and Zander Smokey and Douglas High’s Alexander Garton were all in position to qualify for state. The top six players on non-qualifying teams advance to state. Taggart was in 13th overall and in fourth among players not on qualifying teams after shooting a first round 83 on Monday. Garton was in a three-way tie for fifth among players on non-qualifying teams and 14th overall after firing an 84. Smokey was 17th overall with an 85. Also for Carson, Brandon Engels was 30th after firing a 93. Also for Douglas, Jack Smith was 28th after shooting an 88, Tobin Mayotte fired a 99, Kole Karwoski shot a 101 and Grant Kuhlmann fired a 102. As a team, Douglas was in fifth with a 361 behind Galena (293), Manogue (319), Reno (341) and Spanish Springs (345). Sierra Lutheran golfers make state Three golfers from Sierra Lutheran High School advanced to the state tournament after qualifying Monday at Sunridge Golf and Recreations in Carson City. Dominic Azevedo, Quinn Cummings and Makez Berger will compete May 13-14 in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Class 2A State Boys’ Golf Championship Tournament at Toana Vista in West Wendover Azevedo, the Falcons No. 3 player throughout the season, carded a 96 to lead the way while No. 2 Cummings shot a 100 and the team’s top-ranked player Berger scored a 103, about 11 strokes off his average but still good enough to qualify. North Tahoe won the team title, edging Incline by four strokes 353-357. Whittell finished third with 383 and those three teams advanced to state. Sage Ridge was fourth (398) and Sierra Lutheran was fifth (418). Twelve schools were represented. Azevedo, Cummings and Berger were in the top six individuals, not on state qualifying teams, to advance. Murphy Scott, of North Tahoe, won the individual title with a 3-over par 75. Scott was 3-over after his first three holes but played even par the rest of the way and overtook second place finisher Spencer Uppal, of Sage Ridge, with a birdie on the ninth hole. Also competing for Sierra Lutheran were Teagan Berger (119), Zane Cummings (121) and Shane Burkett (126).
