Recent evening walks with my dog bring a welcome dose of joy due to the colorful holiday light displays along our neighborhood route. From simple strands to ornate scenes that span the length of a front yard, they all make me smile, and I’m grateful for the effort put forth by those who so creatively arrange them.
Through Dec. 20, local folks who’ve set up seasonal displays are invited to enter the first annual Holiday Decorating Contest sponsored by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce. The contest is open to individuals, businesses, churches, clubs, organizations, and school groups throughout Douglas County.
Decorations should be visible from outside and curb appeal is emphasized. Prizes will be awarded for: Best Holiday Door, Most Creative, People’s Choice, and Best of Show. Judging takes place after dark on weekends throughout December.
Entrants are encouraged to post photos of their decorations on social media and tag the CVCC on Facebook. Applications for the contest can be found on the CVCC events calendar at business.carsonvalleynv.org/events/calendar/2020-12-01; click on “Holiday Decorating Contest” listed on December 5 and the application link is on the right side of the page.
Hosted by Channel 2 News, the 28th annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive takes place on Friday, December 11 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food and monetary donations collected at the local Carson Valley Inn event will help support the Carson Valley Community Food Closet’s mission to achieve food security in Douglas County.
CVCFC Director Sarah Sanchez said organizers are hoping for a successful food drive this year and that the Carson Valley always comes through with contributions. A list of suggested items to donate is available on the CVCFC website at thefoodcloset.org.
“Donors can stay in their car; they don’t have to get out,” Sanchez said, noting that volunteers do all the unloading of goods at the drive-through event. Sanchez encouraged anyone interested in volunteering for the Christmas food drive to contact the CVCFC as soon as possible since all volunteers must be pre-registered prior to this year’s event.
CVCFC is located at 1251 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville; their number is 775-782-3711.
Another way to contribute to the Share Your Christmas event is via Douglas Disposal’s “Share the Joy” food drive, which takes place December 7-11.
Active residential customers may place canned and other non-perishable foods (in a sealed bag) next to the trash can on their regular collection day next week. Food contributions may also be dropped off at Douglas Disposal’s main office, 1653 N. Lucerne Street, Suite A in Minden; or the Transfer Station, 902 Dump Road in Gardnerville.
Anyone experiencing bear activity in their neighborhood can either drop off a donation or call 775-782-5713 to arrange for a specific pickup time.
All the bagged goods collected by Douglas Disposal employees will be included in the Share Your Christmas food drive totals and distributed throughout the community. More information can be found at douglasdisposal.com.
