Initial results from the 2020 General Election were released at 10:45 p.m.

The Clerk-Treasurer's Office paused counting mailed ballots on Tuesday to fully staff the polls, meaning there are still around 3,400 ballots left to count, along with whatever arrives in the mails.

Clerk-Treasurer Kathy Lewis said the day went well and that voters were in a good mood.

“Things went very smoothly,” Lewis said as the clock ticked down to the final 10 minutes the polls were open.

The initial line at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center in Gardnerville when polls opened went down quickly and by lunch time people were able to walk right into the polling place without waiting outside.

“I think people were excited to vote how they wanted to vote and were generally in great spirits,” she said. “They were very complimentary of our processes, and of being able to vote and how smoothly it went.”

Lewis said that once the clerks are done closing up the polls, it would be around an hour before results would be available.

“That will only be countywide because I can’t imagine I’ll be able to release anything statewide for a while,” she said.

The clerks have to wait for the last voter to vote in Nevada before they release any results for races that affect more than one county, like that for president, congress or assembly.

Any results released tonight will be preliminary with ballots mailed to the Clerk's Office today not arriving until Wednesday or Thursday.

Results are not final until they are canvassed by Douglas County commissioners on Nov. 16.
