If there’s a major highway in Western Nevada, chances are it’s under road controls as more than 5 inches of Sierra cement fell in Carson Valley this morning.
According to NVroads.com, chains or snow tires are required on Highway 395 south of Indian Hills all the way to Bridgeport. The same is true of Highway 88 from Minden south to the state line and Highway 208 from Holbrook Junction to Wellington.
Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive with snow tires on Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe and over Kingsbury Grade.
Highway patrols in both Nevada and California are dealing with spinouts and minor traffic collisions this morning.
Snow started falling just after midnight at Minden-Tahoe Airport and was so thick at times visibility dropped to a quarter-mile.
Snow was still falling across the Valley at 7:30 a.m. when 5.5 inches had accumulated in Genoa, adding an inch over two hours.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Minden until 10 a.m. today, but snow is expected to fall through the day.
According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature today is supposed to just barely exceed freezing at 35 degrees. Forecasters say snow could be heavy at times, with accumulations of up to 2-4 inches during the day.
The low temperature tonight could drop to 7 degrees, which could mean very slick roads for Monday’s commute.
