Joining with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Carson Valley Community Food Closet announces the launch of Mobile Harvest, a program dedicated to “providing those in need of food assistance with access to fresh, nutritious foods.”

Starting Nov. 3, FBNN’s Mobile Harvest offers fresh fruits and vegetables at CVCFC the first Tuesday of each month from 12:45-1:45 p.m.

Recipients are asked to complete a brief, annual intake form upon their initial visit. There are no other requirements to receive this assistance.

CVCFC is located at 1251 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville and has served Douglas County residents since 1989. As a 501(c)(3) organization, the food closet operates in part through the generosity of local individuals, businesses, churches, and community service groups. For more information, log onto thefoodcloset.org.

Turkey Trot goes virtual

Registration is open for the fourth annual “Huffin and Puffin for Turkey and Stuffin” 5K fun run.

The event benefits the CVCFC and DAWG (dawgrescue.com), the non-profit Douglas Animal Welfare Group. DAWG aims to better the lives of Douglas County animals by working to improve their adoptability, providing education about responsible pet ownership, and engaging in other activities that support animals, their owners, and the community.

Participants of all ages are invited to walk, jog, run, or hike in a location of their choosing anytime between Nov. 12-26. Suggested race route maps are also available. Selfies at the start and along the chosen route are encouraged.

Register online at thefoodcloset.org. Cost is $25 per person and includes a race packet containing a race bib, medal, T-shirt, and swag bag. Packets may be picked up at CVCFC between Nov. 10-26; check online at thefoodcloset.org/turkey-trot-faqs.html for specific days and hours.

Saturday night moon gazing and time shifting

Halloween revelers can howl at the full Hunter’s Moon this Saturday, Oct. 31. October is the only month in 2020 with two full moons: the first was the full Harvest Moon on Oct. 1, and this weekend’s Hunter’s Moon is also considered a blue moon since it’s the second full moon within the same month.

A full moon illuminating the sky on Halloween night is pretty rare occurrence, and we won’t have another one until 2039.

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. Remember to turn clocks back before heading to bed on Saturday night and enjoy the “extra” hour of sleep in the morning.
