A proposal to sell 29 acres of U.S. Forest Service land north of Jacks Valley Road could provide the right of way for the extension of Vista Grande south from Topsy.

It has been a third of a century since the land was part of a larger exchange between the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

The parcel is surrounded by development on three sides.

“This isolated parcel is surrounded by development and no longer suitable to the current needs of the Forest and will be sold through a competitive bid process in accordance with the Forest Service Facilities Realignment and Enhancement Act of 2005,” said Carson District Ranger Matt Zumstein.

The property is on the list for disposal in the Douglas County Public Lands Act that has been bouncing around Congress for the past eight years.

Douglas County Public Works Director Phil Ritger said the Forest Service has included easements to Douglas County for the extension of Valley Vista.

“The approach streamlines the process into a single environmental review and will allow the county to work with the new potential buyer on placement of the road and utilities,” he said last week.

Some funding for the road remains in the old Redevelopment Area No. 1 fund, which was set aside for the project.

The notice for the sale appeared in a Reno newspaper on Aug. 12 with the public comment to expire 30 days later.

Revenue generated from the sale will support projects on the Carson Ranger District that are needed and would better serve the public, Zumstein said. Currently, the district has a backlog of deferred maintenance needs for all its’ administrative facilities.

Public comments will be accepted for 30 days following publication of the legal. The date of this legal notice is the exclusive means for calculating the time to submit comments. The draft NOPA and other project documents are available at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=60010.

They can be uploaded to the “Comments/Objection on Project” section of the project website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=60010 under “get connected.” Put “Vista Grande Administrative Site Sale NOPA” into the subject line.
