Bail was increased to $50,000 for an Arizona man who led deputies on a high-speed chase through Douglas County neighborhoods and past its schools just as they were letting out on Thursday afternoon.

Reggie Lewis, 45, was arrested after a deputy conducted a pursuit intervention technique on Highway 395 in Indian Hills after he was pursued at high speed through the Valley and up Jacks Valley Road.

“He passed several schools that had to be told to shelter in place,” prosecutor A.J. Hames said in asking for a higher bail. “It was very upsetting to the community.”

Hames also pointed out that if Lewis, 45, made bail on any Douglas charges he would likely be returned to the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, which issued a warrant for him.

“If he posted bail, he wouldn’t be able to appear at any future court appearances,” Hames said.

East Fork Justice of the Peace Pro Tem Paul Gilbert ordered the higher bail and set a continued arraignment for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lewis is reportedly wanted for murder in his home state, was driving a white Cadillac when a license plate detector alerted authorities near Meyers.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol notified Douglas authorities that they were chasing Lewis down Highway 88 and onto Diamond Valley Road.

He continued north and turned onto Kimmerling and drove around in the Gardnerville Ranchos looping around to Dresslerville and then Centerville lanes before driving back across the Valley to Foothill Road.

He drove north through the stop sign at Kingsbury and then through Nevada’s oldest town.

By the time he cleared traffic, deputies reported he was hitting speeds of 130 mph.

He turned back south from Jacks Valley Road onto Highway 395.

Deputies knocked the Cadillac off the road near the storage units south of Mica Drive. He attempted to flee on foot but as caught after a short pursuit.

The highway was blocked for around a half hour while both the suspect’s and the deputy’s vehicles were towed.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the collision that stopped the driver.
