With visibility of less than a quarter mile around 8 a.m. Sunday morning, freezing fog may present a challenge for motorists.

Minden-Tahoe Airport’s weather station reported the fog came in just before 2 a.m. and was still quite thick at dawn.

The National Weather Service has issued a freezing fog warning for most of Western Nevada, including Carson Valley through 10 a.m.

With temperatures of around 16 degrees at the airport, any moisture on the roads will be ice.

“A light coating of ice may create treacherous driving conditions,” forecasters said. “It will be very easy to lose control of your vehicle even with all-wheel and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Slow down and avoid braking and making sudden turns.”

While foggy in the valley’s conditions above 6,000 feet are clear, according to traffic cameras at Lake Tahoe, with sunny skies.

Once the fog clears, Valley residents can expect sunny conditions with a high temperature near 42 degrees and a light breeze.

Monday is expected to see more clouds as a front eases into the region on Tuesday morning before it turns to rain on Wednesday.

By Thursday, the snow level is expected to drop to 5,000 feet with snow likely by Christmas Day on Saturday.
