A thunderstorm bringing wind gusts of 40 mph, moderate to heavy rain and possible small hail is headed across Western Nevada and Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

“These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor (local media) for more information,” forecasters said in a 2:10 p.m. statement. “If on or near Lake Tahoe, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle.”

Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from a thunderstorm.

“If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Do not get caught on the water in a thunderstorm.”
