As of this morning, there is no report that any structures were lost in the Jacks Valley Fire, which having been out there and seen it myself last night, is remarkable. Let’s hope that holds through today. Firefighters expect full containment today.

My sources say Jacks Valley Road is open. There will still be a ton of firefighting traffic through there. Fortunately, school is out for summer so Jacks Valley Elementary is closed. NVEnergy reports the lights are back on up there.

I recognize that some readers might wonder why the fire wasn’t in today’s edition of The Record-Courier. One of the first lessons I learned when I arrived here in August 1989 was that huge news almost invariably occurs after the paper goes to bed.

The proposal to take down Genoa’s historic lights went just about as you’d expect last night. Town Board members said they wanted until December to make a decision. Candy Dance is a go for Sept. 24-25 this year.

It’s Buddy Night at the Carson Valley Days Carnival today. You have to go to the carnival to BOGO tickets at 5 p.m. Raley’s still had discount tickets on Wednesday. You might be able to score some from there, Nevada State Bank or Accolades Trophies today, or they may be out.

Temperatures dipped down to 30 degrees this morning at Minden-Tahoe Airport and 28 degrees at Double Spring Flat. Up on the bench I’m seeing 37 degrees so far.

The wind will finally die down today under sunny skies with a high of 69 degrees with a 5 mph breeze. We’ll be back to summer by Saturday and up to the 90s early next week.
