A portion of a $3.97 million grant designed to expand behavioral health services in rural Nevada will be coordinated with Minden mentoring center, Moxy Up.

Douglas and Mineral counties are in designated health professional shortage areas.

Chicanos Por La Causa Nevada, headquartered in North Las Vegas is expanding services through a U.S. Department of Health & Human Services grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant is designed to expand certified community behavioral health clinics.

The two-year award comes from the CARES Act and supports the mental health, substance use, job development, family supports, and crisis services in both Douglas County and Mineral County.

“Growing up in rural Nevada, you gain an appreciation for a lack of health care providers where you live. It becomes more than a statement you hear in casual conversation. It becomes your mission to change the way people do business and can access necessary services," said Moxy Up Executive Director Coleen Lawrence.

The award focuses on increasing mental health and substance use treatment and supports capacity building through improved access to telehealth services, including telepsychiatry and teletherapy, as well as connecting clients to peer supporters and community-based health workers.

“For an entire year, we have been unable to properly process major life-changing events, from the loss of a job, a graduation celebration without family and friends, or grieving together the loss of a loved one. As a community and individuals, we have experienced trauma and anxiety that have accumulated during this pandemic,” said CPLC Nevada President Rupert Ruiz. “We are encouraged by the opportunity to provide much-needed behavioral health services and comprehensive resources to heal and help empower the resilient residents of rural and tribal Northern Nevada.”
