Genoa, Nev. — At 4 p.m. Wednesday, Ebbetts Pass officially became the last Sierra Pass to open, according to CalTrans. Highway 4 is now open across the mountains, but I wouldn't recommend it for long vehicles, ever.


Extensions Wildfire Awareness campaign kicks off 11:30 a.m. today with a webinar on evacuation in the face of a big blaze. Douglas County Community Emergency Response Team member and longtime defensible space advocate Ann Grant will talk about making a go bag. You can register online at bit.ly/WildfireEvacuationPrep.


The owner of 20 acres off Currant Court is seeking to divide the parcel into four lots. Hidden Woods LLC purchased that and nearly another 20 acres for $1.7 million recorded on St. Patrick’s Day. The request goes before the Administrative Hearing Panel 2 p.m. today.


Bears are definitely awake at the Lake with a Zephyr Cove resident reporting one was knocking at his door on Tuesday night. The bear left on it’s own, but I’m keeping my trash in until garbage day.


Minden is hosting its Carson Valley Days breakfast before the parade on June 12. As near as I can tell, most traditional events in the Valley will be firing back up this year.


I succumbed to the fever and purchased tomato plants over the weekend, but I’m keeping them inside for a little longer. While the lows are well over freezing for the next week, there’s almost always a cold spell around Memorial Day that can kill sensitive plants.


We might see some moisture this weekend with a chance of rain on Saturday night and Sunday. Though in Carson Valley, three days is a lifetime when it comes to the weather, so don’t get attached.


Today we’re looking at sunny skies with a high temperature of 84 degrees. The Zephyr will pick up in the afternoon at 10-15 mph, gusting to 30 mph.
