Genoa, Nev. — Douglas County reported its 36th death from the coronavirus on Thursday. Douglas had 66 active cases on Thursday with 2,816 recoveries since the outbreak began.
Thursday also marked the end of community drive-through testing. With only two dozen folks turning out for the last testing event, it was a good time to wrap that up and devote those resources elsewhere. There’s a vaccination clinic at Fuji Park 3-5 p.m. Tuesday.
The holiday formerly known as Decoration Day is Monday, but a large part of the Memorial Day observance will be happening today with volunteers placing flags on veterans’ graves in cemeteries across Carson Valley.
Douglas County School Board trustees will be tackling their final budget 4 p.m. virtually. To participate visit www.dcsd.k12.nv.us/boardnews and click on the oval purple button.
The farewell ceremony for Skip Pardee’s retirement is actually 4-7 p.m. today at his office on County Road at Library Lane. He’s encouraging folks to come by and visit. Thanks to the reader who spotted that I had it in Thursday’s morning report.
While not the actual Census, the U.S. Census Bureau released its July 1 2020 estimates on Thursday. Douglas County had 49,088 residents on July 1, 2020, up from 48,998 the year before. Neither the estimate, nor the actual Census, will include the number of people who’ve moved here since July 2020.
There is a low rock wall along the crest of the Pine Nuts traveling south of Sunrise Pass Road a reader sent me video of on Thursday. The only reference to it I found online at dubbed it the Not So Great Wall of the Pine Nuts, which is a pretty cool name. It sounded like the party was getting an early start last night at Stateline. Be careful out there this weekend. The warm Memorial Day holiday is going to combine with post-coronavirus euphoria to make for a busy weekend on the emergency front.
Expect a warm sunny Memorial Day weekend with temperatures passing near 89 on Monday on their way to the mid-90s. Today will be fairly mild with a high of 81 degrees.
