Genoa, Nev. — An open house and harvest thanks is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Family Support Council’s new home at 1516 Main St., Unit E, in the Haas Center in Gardnerville. They’re offering a light lunch and a tour of the new space.

I saw something online about whether it’s OK to say “Happy Veterans Day.” As a veteran, who is usually pretty happy, I use the term observance for Veterans Day and similar holidays. Perhaps temper your enthusiasm with the recognition of sacrifice both by living and past veterans.

That being said, today is Veterans Day, so school’s out, the government’s shut down, as are the banks and the Post Office. Maybe take a moment today in remembrance of those who serve and have served.

Eastside Memorial’s flag retirement ceremony is 11 a.m. I’m sure they have a stack of flags from the last several months, but if you’d like to watch the cemetery is located off Buckey Road.

There’s a little fog down by the river that’s probably burning off as I write this. Today’s forecast is for mostly sunny skies with a high temperature near 67 degrees and the wind picking up out of the north at 5 mph.
