The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge honored more than 160 veterans Saturday with a presentation of the colors by the Douglas High School Junior ROTC Color Guard Team, tri-tip dinner and lively patriotic sing-along.
The lodge was festively decorated in red, white and blue, with each dinner table featuring service flags around floral centerpieces. Veterans and their guests were welcomed at the door by Elks veterans with a gift of a flag lapel pin.
To kick off the evening’s festivities, the Douglas High School JROTC Color Guard Team presented the colors.
Then a tri-tip dinner, prepared by lodge members, was served by the JROTC cadets.
Col. Mike Glynn, who oversees JROTC at Douglas High School, spoke briefly about the program. Beyond maintaining a Color Guard Team and marching in local parades, the 99 members participate in shooting competitions and Continuous Improvement and STEM (robot) projects.
All of the veterans were then recognized by their service era, including several
World War II and Korean War veterans, and were warmly applauded. As patriotic music played, guests sang along to service songs.
