The Tahoe-Douglas Elks host its annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest Nov. 6 at the Douglas County Community Center gym. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and competition starts at 10 a.m.

The Hoop Shoot is open to children ages 8-13 as of April 1, 2022, and is free to all participants. Competitions are divided into three age brackets each for boys and girls: ages 8-9 (participants in this division will shoot the basketball four feet in front of the regulation free throw line), ages 10-11, and ages 12-13.

First-place winners in each category advance to the District Tournament in Reno on Jan. 15, 2022. State finals will be held in Hawthorne on Feb. 12, followed by regionals on Feb. 26 and the national championship on April 30. The Elks cover players’ expenses for the regional and national competitions.

The Hoop Shoot program is celebrating its 50th year, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks are planning a “gold-medal National Finals for a golden anniversary.” This year’s national competition will be held at Chicago’s Wintrust Arena, home to the WNBA’s Chicago Sky and DePaul University’s Blue Demons.

The Hoop Shoot is a project of the Elks National Foundation, which “helps Elks build stronger communities through programs that support youth, honor veterans, and meet needs in areas where Elks live and work.” More information about the ENF, Hoop Shoot, and other Elks programs can be found online at elks.org.

Halloween Parade at The Chateau

Looking for a fun opportunity to show off your Halloween look? Don your costume and head to The Chateau at Gardnerville Assisted Living and Memory Care today at 4:30 p.m. to join their walk-through Halloween parade.

This is The Chateau’s second time hosting the parade. Business Office Manager Kendra Short said last year’s event was incredibly memorable for residents as it was the first time in nearly a year, they had an opportunity to see other members of the community following COVID restrictions.

“The residents really enjoyed the parade,” Short said. “There were magical reactions and so many smiles … that’s what it’s all about.”

This year’s celebration takes place beneath a tent in the front courtyard area. All ages are welcome to attend, and parade-goers will be given goodie bags.

The Chateau at Gardnerville is located at 1565 Virginia Ranch Road in Gardnerville. Parade participants are asked to park on the street adjacent to the building. Call 775-782-3100 with any questions.
