Genoa, Nev. — Containment on the Caldor Fire jumped to 83 percent on Wednesday and grew an acre to 221,775 acres. With drier weather the fire’s starting to burn a bit within its interior, according to the active fire mapping. Don’t be shocked to see some smoke rising northwest of Caples Lake.
A partial reopening of the Eldorado National Forest takes effect today. Overnight camping and open flame fires are banned through March 31 2022. Mormon Emigrant Trail, Silver Fork and Wrights Lake roads will remain closed.
Today is the last day of the water year and the drought has taken hold across the West. Precipitation in the mountains over the past year is the lowest since 1988, according to the National Weather Service drought update report issued Tuesday.
August was a good month for Douglas County casinos with Stateline raking in $23.6 million, up nearly 8 percent over the same month in 2020. The casino win for the first two months of the fiscal year is $55.8 million, a smidge less than 30 percent up over last year, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

The 5 p.m. collision was at Charlotte and Highway 395 south of Gardnerville on Wednesday. One person was taken to Carson Valley Medical Center for treatment. The Nevada Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation.
