A California truck driver faces a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter in connection with the Feb. 23, 2021, death of Bodie Flat resident Sean Leonard.

Dzmitry Y. Zantsevich of North Highlands, Calif., appeared in East Fork Justice Court on Monday.

His case was continued until May 9.

Zantsevich was driving south on Highway 395 when he failed to see that Leonard was stopped to make a left turn at Courtland Avenue.

The collision occurred at around 9:50 a.m. when the 2012 Freightliner Zantsevich was driving struck the rear of Leonard’s Dodge Ram pickup. The pickup was pushed into the northbound lanes where a 2016 Peterbilt utility service truck collided with Leonard’s vehicle. Leonard, a 53-year-old former tow truck driver, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision was investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol.

In addition to the manslaughter charge, Zantsevich faces charges failure to exercise due care and obstruction connected with issues allegedly with his logbook.

The maximum penalty for each misdemeanor is six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
