Genoa, Nev. — A winter storm warning for the greater Lake Tahoe area takes effect 5 p.m. today and is expected to last through 11 a.m. Friday with 1-2 feet of heavy snow forecast for the Carson Range and 2-3 feet of snow on the Sierra crest above 7,000 feet.

Tonight’s commute over the passes may not be too bad as the storm arrives, but expect a rough ride Thursday and Friday morning. With 80 mph winds over the ridges, motorists could see blizzard conditions at times.

Another wind advisory takes effect in Carson Valley at 8 p.m. today and lasting through lunchtime Thursday. Expect 20-35 mph winds gusting to 55 mph tonight, which might affect the power.

Nearly 50 NV Energy customers were without power on Tuesday evening. The power went out at 5:11 p.m. and was restored around 7 p.m. You can check or report outages at nvenergy.com There’s an app if you want to download it, but you can also access it through a browser.

The snow telemetry in the Sierra is showing an upward trend with Ebbetts Pass recording 13.3 inches snow water equivalent today, up from 10.1 inches on April 11. Carson Pass isn’t doing quite so well, with 7.7 inches this morning, but that’s up .7 inches from its lowest point, which was also April 11.

I measured .4 inches of rain from Tuesday’s storm, which adds up to an inch of precipitation a mile north of Genoa since April 12 when the storms started rolling in. The rain gauge at Walley’s indicated .45 inches. It doesn’t look like there was significant precipitation in the middle of the Valley.

Expect sunny skies with a high temperature near 62 degrees, with breeay conditions and an east wind 5-10 mph, shifting southwest to 15-20 mph later this morning. Gusts could hit 30 mph. If it’s going to rain it will fall closer to midnight tonight.
