Millennium Medical and Spa Suites raised more than $6,000 in support of the four-legged team at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

“We wanted to do something and get the community’s support, too,” said Cosmetic Professional at Millennium, Pam Horton.

Horton spearheaded the fundraiser for the K-9 unit during their Aug. 6 Law Enforcement Appreciation event and raised a total of $6,177. The check was presented to the team on Monday.

“Millennium Medical and Spa Suites has been hosting a Law Enforcement appreciation event for three years, but this is the first year the fundraising was added to the event,” said Horton. “We wanted to do more in support of the K-9 unit and show we care about them too.”

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit provide valuable service to the community in crime prevention and suppression, criminal investigation and protection for officers and citizens, but it takes a lot to train and maintain them and the unit relies heavily on community support.

“Deputy Matt Sampson told me that the officers pay for the dog, equipment, training, refurbishing the patrol vehicles so they are safe and equipped with what the dog needs; all of it comes out of their pocket or is community funded,” said Horton. “That’s when I got the idea to do the fundraiser and not just an appreciation event because they do a lot for the community and should have the support and help.”

Deputy Dave Stanley said the funds are going to go towards medical expenses, training and equipment to help upkeep the K-9 Unit so they can continue to serve the community.

“Thank you to the community,” he said. “There is no way we can do this without the support and we appreciate it very much.”

“And thank you to Pam,” said Deputy Matt Sampson. “She did a lot of hard work and we appreciate all she’s done.”
