Genoa, Nev. — Seven people were rescued from a sinking yellow and white boat by Samaritans about a half mile off Zephyr Cove Beach around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Everyone was wearing life vests and Tahoe Douglas firefighters said no one was hurt. The boat is on the bottom of the Lake and the U.S. Coast Guard is investigating.


The Stateline Jail was evacuated after a sump pump at the bottom of the elevator shaft decided to burn up and put smoke in the building, setting off the fire alarm around 2:30 p.m. Everyone was evacuated from the building safely and there’s no report that any inmates wandered off in the excitement.


Air quality levels range from moderate in Minden to just barely in the unhealthy range at Pine View Estates in the Pine Nuts. fire.airnow.gov is showing smoke from the Washburn Fire is here, but may not be affecting the Valley floor, yet, due to the inversion.


The Washburn fire continues to burn near Yosemite. The Fire Information for Resource Management site is showing about 6,500 acres affected by the fire, with the official report from last night 4,261 acres and 23 percent contained as firefighters make a little progress.


I was down at the Seeman Pond on Wednesday in time to see someone pull a fish out of the water from the dock. An opening ceremony is 10 a.m. Friday. There were a couple of anglers enjoying the pond around lunchtime.


The high temperature at Minden-Tahoe Airport hit 97 degrees for the second day in a row on Wednesday. The good news is that the 45-degree low this morning was about 5 degrees cooler than Wednesday morning.


Expect widespread haze between 10 a.m. and noon today with the high temperature around 95 degrees. The wind will pick up out of the southwest at 10-15 mph this afternoon, gusting to 25 mph.
