Genoa, Nev. — Interpretive hikes today and Saturday will offer an opportunity to poke around Carson Pass. Geology’s the topic of today’s 10:30 a.m. hike. If that’s too short a turnaround, two more 1.5-mile hikes are 10 a.m. Saturday. All start at the Carson Pass Information Station on Highway 88. Call 209-258-8606 for a spot.

Gardnerville is showing “The Rookie” at Heritage Park on their new retractable movie screens. Watching them raise and lower those screens might compete with the movie. Show starts at dusk.

The Comstock Cowboys are returning to TJ’s Corral tonight after last year’s concert was canceled. The concert is a fundraiser for the Carson Valley Arts Council. If you had tickets last year, they’re still good. If not, visit cvartscouncil.com for more information.

Oak Fire smoke is way down in the Valley, but containment on the 19,000-acre blaze has been delayed a week to Aug. 6. Nearly 4,000 firefighters have put a line around 42 percent of the blaze near Yosemite that has destroyed 135 structures, according to www.fire.ca.gov.

There were a couple of medical calls on Thursday with symptoms that could easily be heat exhaustion as the temperature hit 102 degrees at Minden-Tahoe Airport. Fredericksburg resident Jeff Garvin reported 104 degrees at his place.

Today is R-C intern Haley Estabrook’s last day. She returns to Arizona State University next week to continue her sports journalism studies. Haley, a 2021 Douglas High graduate, has been a welcome addition to The R-C staff this summer. She noted that the temperature in Tempe was actually cooler than Gardnerville on Thursday.

We’re still hip deep in a heat advisory with highs forecast to hit 99 degrees, but as we’ve seen from Day 1, could end up being a bit hotter. The wind will pick up out of the northeast at 5-10 mph, gusting to 20 mph this afternoon.
