Area 6 School Board candidate Katherine Dickerson, 63, isn’t shy about her platform.
It’s on the back of her card where there's an X next to Critical Race Theory, Social Emotional Learning, Diversity, Equity or Inclusion.
The Topaz Ranch Estates resident was the first person to file for the seat held by Ruhenstroth resident Heather Jackson. Jackson was appointed to the seat last year and is seeking her first elected term to the board.
Dickerson and husband Tellie moved to Douglas County in January 2017, where she owns and operates a salon and clothing store.
Tellie Dickerson is a native of Churchill County, who substitute teaches in both Douglas and Lyon County.
Dickerson said she was raised in the Carson Valley, where her early years involved foster care, emancipation at 16, and single motherhood at 21.
Dickerson said she is concerned with how schools are educating students.
“Over the years I have watched the transition from traditional education in our schools to schools becoming laboratories to spread social justice policies. Parents are being excluded from having a voice in their children’s education, and adolescents are being sexualized in the name of health. It is my mission to stop this from happening in Douglas County schools. The 2022 Election is pivotal in reversing education’s progressive march away from the values on which America was founded. Acknowledging students who strive hard for their efforts instead of imposing a supposed equitable outcome by giving or taking away credit based on physical characteristics needs to stop now, and I am committed to seeing that it does.”
