Genoa, Nev. — With the hearty endorsement of her rivals, 27-year-old Cassi Uhart was appointed to the Carson Water Subconservancy District board by county commissioners on Thursday. Uhart is a fifth-generation rancher and may be the youngest person ever to serve on the board. She replaces Jack Jacobs who sold the berry farm and moved to Colorado.

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake around 10 p.m. Thursday on the mountain above Walker set off a swarm of smaller temblors south of Topaz Lake that lasted until at least 4 a.m. today. That spot has been rattling since July’s big 6.0 quake sent rocks onto Highway 395.

The political floodgates opened and the race for School Board Area 7 went from free ride to a primary with candidates Minden resident Roberta Butterfield and Foothill resident Nicholas Brashears deciding to try their luck on St. Patrick’s Day.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District saw four people sign up for two seats, while another candidate filed for Indian Hills General Improvement District bringing that to six for three seats.

Though I’m a little shaky on the primary rule for districts, I believe you need one more than twice the number of candidates to move it to a primary.

Meanwhile, one of the county’s largest districts failed to draw any candidates in the first nine days of filing. The Douglas County Mosquito Abatement District has four open seats and no waiting.

Commissioner John Engels’ pick for governor, Michelle Fiore, filed for state treasurer instead on Thursday. St. Patrick’s Day was the second without someone filing for governor. Today is the last day to file for elected office in Nevada. Candidates may still withdraw until March 29.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” opens tonight at the CVIC Hall in Minden. You can buy tickets for the half dozen performances this weekend and next at the Copeland Building box office or www.shottix4u.com

Rain and snow are in the forecast for the last weekend of winter, but for today expect mostly sunny skies with a high temperature near 65 degrees and the wind calm picking up out of the southwest at 5 mph in the afternoon.
