There’s a possibility Minden could see a new high temperature record Friday as temperatures are expected to hit 82 degrees, 4 degrees above the 78-degree record set in 2007.

Records have been kept in Minden since 1906.

The Douglas County seat came pretty close to a new record high temperature on Wednesday with 76 degrees, just short of the 78-degree record set in the spring heat wave of 2004. Today’s high temperature is expected to top out at 76 degrees again, according to the National Weather Service.

The recorded high at the South Lake Tahoe Airport was 66 degrees, four degrees over the previous record high for March 23, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The normal high temperature for the time of year is 49. The service said the current temperatures are more typical for late May.

The service is only expecting temperatures to ramp up through Saturday which will lead to snowmelt that could be hazardous when recreating near rivers, streams and lakes.

The opening days of spring 2004 set high temperature records every day March 20-24, peaking at 84 degrees on March 21.
