With the coronavirus emergency directives lifting on Friday, Carson Valley’s events calendar is filling up fast.

This weekend sees a half dozen different events, including the return of Big Mama’s Car Show and Shine on Saturday at Lampe Park.

Presented by the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club, the car show is back after a two-year hiatus.

“This show has a great history, starting originally at the old senior center and has grown to a large show that generally fills up the park,” said organizers.

Cars, trucks and motorcycles of all years are welcome to participate.

Organizers asked that groups arrive together so they can park in the same locations. They aren’t allowing participants to save spaces.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. with pre-registered vehicles able to pull into a spot.

The show and judging starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club will be serving beer and sodas with music by Time Warp Chuck. An awards banquet is 3:30 p.m.

Open House

The Sports Aviation Foundation is sponsoring an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21 at Minden-Tahoe Airport.

“This casual family-friendly event will feature a line-up of very cool aircraft based at our county owned airport,” organizer Laurie Harden Ricardi said. “The Build-a-Plane Foundation, a local organization that teaches youth aircraft construction skills, will be showcasing their project — a single-engine Murphy Elite.”

Harden Ricardi urged residents to take a half-hour to visit the airport and see what lies behind the hangar doors.

“The aircraft owners will be standing by to answer questions and point out unique features of their ship,” she said. “Play Airport I-Spy and take home a hand-tossed toy airplane while supplies last.  A free hot dog to the first 100 visitors.”  Sit down meals with table service available at the Taildragger Cafe.  Free entry at the Taildragger Patio.

Harden Ricardi warned visitors that the event will be canceled in the event of snow, rain or wind gust of 15 or above.  For wind gust information, visit www.mindentahoeairport.com, click on AWOS & weather tab.
