The young women and their guests were honored at an awards luncheon where the recipients read their autobiographical essays. They each received a $3,000 scholarship.
Alaina Nunez has been accepted at the University of Nevada, Reno, and will study psychology. She plans to further her education with a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. Her dream is to open her own non-profit in memory of her deceased mother fighting for the importance of mental health in teens and adolescents and giving everyone a safe place to work towards living with their mental illnesses. Her honors include National Honor Society, American Legion Award, and Honor Band. She has worked with Grief and Therapy Groups for Teens at Hope and Healing.
Cheyenne McCormick has been accepted at the University of Nevada, Reno, and will study Criminal Justice. She hopes to pursue a career in Criminal Psychology or Forensic Analysis. Her honors include Miss Douglas County’s Outstanding Teen, Honor Choir, Nevada All-State Choir, Nevada All-State Academic Award, and Scholastic Art Show Silver Key Award. She has been a spokesperson and host for the local Special Olympics.
The University Women’s Club has been active in the Carson Valley since 1928. Members gather locally for social and informational meetings. Membership is open to women who wish to support students seeking higher education and to participate in learning pursuits for themselves. The annual scholarship awards are financed entirely by private donation from club members. The 2022 committee members are Charlotte Booth, Melanie Boudreau, and Nancy Raymond.
