“P” is for the Patriotic was presented by Minden Elementary School’s fifth-graders Thursday, in honor of Memorial Day.
The students performed an ‘A-Z’ U.S. history lesson, where every letter of the alphabet had something to do with America.
For each letter there was a word that represents something they learned during their lessons, from the states that make up the country to how America received the Statue of Liberty and everything in between that makes America ‘B’ as in “Beautiful’ and ‘X’ in ‘extraordinary.’
“In fifth-grade students learn about U.S. History as part of their social studies curriculum,” said teacher Tracey Hall. “The event was a showcase for what they learned over the year and to celebrate those who have served.”
Douglas High School JROTC students presented the colors during the event and those who have served were honored.
Fifth-grade students from both Hall and Amy Carter’s classes put on the performance. Hall said it took the students about a month to remember American songs like “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “I’m Proud To Be An American,” and to intertwine it all with the alphabet and their history lessons.
“We were really proud of them,” said Hall. “They did so well and the audience seemed to really love it.” A similar program was conducted at Jacks Valley Elementary School on Wednesday.
On Friday, volunteers placed flags on the graves of veterans at Eastside Memorial Park.
Nadia Sandoval said there is no formal event at the cemetery on Monday, but encouraged people to visit to see the flags.
Local, state and federal government offices are closed on Monday, as are banks, the post office and The Record-Courier.
