Genoa, Nev. — According to forecasters, a snowstorm will arrive in the Western Nevada an hour after the polls open at 7 a.m. As of 6:30 a.m., National Weather Service radar showed the bulk of the storm was still in Central California, though it appears to be headed this way.
While road controls are in place in the Sierra, there’s no indication of snowfall yet as the winter weather advisory enters its third hour. Timing of the storm may blunt its impact as it’s expected to arrive after dawn.
Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in five locations around the county, including the election tent behind the historic courthouse, the Douglas County Community & Senior Center, the Washoe Tribe, TRE and Kahle community centers. Any Douglas voter may cast a ballot at any location. Voters may also drop off their paper ballots at any location.
Final turnout numbers for early in-person and paper ballots were 16,925 as of end of business Saturday. That’s pretty close to the projections from last week and comes to 41.7 percent of the active voters. As many as 11,000 people could turn out to vote today.
It’s going to be a long night waiting for results, with best guess after 10 p.m. Since all the ballots that arrived in the mail and were dropped off today won’t be counted until Wednesday, it’s going to be horse race coverage.
Will the weather affect turnout today? I don’t know. The forecast calls for snow mainly after 8 a.m. with a high temperature of 36 degrees. The wind should shift north this morning. The forecast calls for 3-5 inches in Minden, but actual precipitation may vary.
