Genoa, Nev. — A power outage affected very nearly every home and business in Carson Valley from Gardnerville to Lake Tahoe this morning. The lights are still out in Genoa as I write this. According to nvenergy.com there are 484 separate outages affecting 21,584 customers in the county.
I took a sampling of restoration times and they range from 6:30 to 8:15 a.m., at least. Deputies are conducting traffic control at the intersections where traffic lights are out, including 395 and 88, Gilman, Waterloo, and Lake Tahoe.
Firefighters responded to the Buckeye Substation, which where a transformer was on fire at 6:10 a.m. It’s not on a pole, but is within the substation itself, which is not good. Most of the power running out to the county comes through that substation.
Douglas County School District is on a normal schedule this morning. From reports it sounds like power’s out to Minden. I’ll update this if I hear more.
It’s 9 degrees out at Minden-Tahoe Airport this morning, so it’s going to be a chilly morning if you’re relying on power for heat. It should be clear with a high temperature of 50 degrees, once the sun comes up.
