Record of service

In 2018, I was first elected to serve as Nevada’s 23rd State Treasurer. During my first term, the Treasury has done more for Nevadans than ever before. We have supported and saved thousands of small businesses (and the jobs they create) by running the largest small business grant program in the history of the State. We’ve expanded access and affordability to higher education, returned hundreds of millions of dollars to Nevadans and created more opportunity for generations of Nevadans through focused and effective financial management.

Since I’ve been Treasurer the State of Nevada has received its highest credit ratings in history and we’ve generated over $154 million in interest returns to help support our State’s general portfolio while keeping our taxes low.

Education

I graduated with a B.A. from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration and also hold a J.D. from UNLV's William S. Boyd School of Law.

Why are you running?

I am running for re-election to keep the State’s finances on solid financial ground, and to continue the great work we’ve done over the last 3 years, such as securing the highest credit rating in Nevada history, delivering over $100 million to small businesses, and working to create 30,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade through the State Infrastructure Bank.

Briefly describe the core duties of the position you are running for

As Treasurer, I serve as the State’s chief investment officer, and am responsible for managing the investments of a general portfolio of over $7 billion, overseeing $37 billion in nationwide college savings assets, or performing debt service on $1.2 billion of outstanding general obligation bonds.

A brief statement about your platform

If I am fortunate to be re-elected, I am excited to continue with the numerous things we’ve been able to accomplish during my first term. Over the next four years I am excited to continue returning record amounts of unclaimed property to Nevadans, making our college savings programs accessible to thousands of more families who need help planning and saving for affordable higher education.

Additionally, I’m looking forward to strengthening the number of projects that we can finance through the State Infrastructure Bank, so we can make much-needed investments in affordable housing, public educational facilities, and public safety infrastructure throughout our State.

If I’m re-elected, the first action of my second term would be to sponsor legislation that allows the State to strengthen its investment statutes so the Treasurer’s Office can continue to generate increased returns for the General Fund.

What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position

I made the decision to run because I wanted to ensure that my children could have more opportunities to succeed than I did. As the State’s chief financial officer, I have a responsibility to keep the State on solid financial ground, while making sure that we are constantly working to build the State that Nevadans deserve to live in.

I grew up in a small town in upstate New York and came to Nevada nearly 20 years ago to work in the hospitality industry in Laughlin. Prior to serving as State Treasurer, I built a successful career in the gaming, finance, and consulting sectors. Over the course of my career, I’ve professionally managed hundreds of millions of dollars investments and have worked to operate small businesses employing thousands of people across 16 states.

Throughout my time in the private sector and over the last few years in public service, I’ve remained committed to creating economic opportunities for local businesses and families across Nevada. Over the last three years, I’ve strived to make the Treasurer’s Office one of the most helpful constitutional offices in Carson City. From distributing $360 million in emergency rental assistance to help tenants and small landlords during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing over $100 million to struggling small businesses, and achieving the highest credit rating in State history; we have worked incredibly hard to help families make it through some very challenging economic times.

It's because of my successful financial background, alongside my proven track record that I believe I’m the most qualified candidate to continue serving as Nevada’s State Treasurer.

Simply put, I am the most experienced candidate to serve as chief investment officer.

Over the last three years, I’ve proven that I’m qualified to manage the State’s finances even in times of great economic uncertainty.

Why are you running?

I will be a true fiduciary and direct Nevada’s investments to what is in the best interest of Nevadan’s, and not follow politically driven, financially irresponsible, federal investment fads. I will transparently show those investments with an improved dashboard style website that will be accessible to all.

Nationally, Nevada is 44 of 50 in graduation rate. That is shameful. I will expand the educational opportunities to all, but especially older adults to improve their education, complete their degrees and improve their own standard of living.

Briefly describe the core duties of the position you are running for

The State Treasurer is the chief financial officer of the state and is tasked with establishing policies and employing necessary advisers for investing state funds. The State Treasurer oversees the disbursement of state funds, issue receipts to the State Comptroller for all received funds and Administrate the Unclaimed Funds account.

A brief statement about your platform

I plan to bring fiscal responsibility and transparency to the State Treasurer's office. I will be a fiduciary for the people of Nevada and invest state funds for the complete benefit of the citizens of Nevada. I will create a transparent dashboard online for all Nevadans to see the performance of their investments. I will create educational opportunities for our students and businesses to improve our pathetically low national graduation rate. I will increase the state efforts to find and return unclaimed property that I administer. I am the best suited to deliver on all of these promises.

What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?

I have been in public finance for ten years, private finance for 35 years. I've worked on our Nevada State Budgets and the City of Las Vegas budgets for the past decade. Before these budgets, I opened my first successful company in 1987 and have had companies for 35 years, investing, making payrolls, and responsibly caring for other people's money. I have the experience and knowledge of how all levels of state and local government work to be an outstanding success in this position.

I genuinely have the best interests of the people of Nevada at heart. Government for too long has been profitable for the few well-connected profiteers that have left the people of Nevada out in the cold. I will do my best to ensure the people of Nevada are the beneficiaries of all monetary transactions done at the State level.

I intend to hire the best qualified people available, establish operational and reporting standards, hold everyone accountable for executing the plan and reporting to the people of Nevada our results. In this economy there is no room for mistakes or delays because every cent of Nevada’s money is important.

Record of Service

I have worked in the private sector my entire life. I have served on various PTA boards, as President of Nevada MGMA (Medical Group Management Association), and as State Treasurer and Chapter Treasurer of a national patriotic non-profit group.

Education:

Liberal arts degree from the University of Texas at El Paso (double major – history and English); returned to the university shortly after taking my first job as clinic administrator and took an additional 12 semester hours in Accounting. I subsequently completed and maintained sufficient continuing education hour to earn the MGMA Certified Medical Practice Executive designation. These CE courses focus on management, finances, leadership, etc.

Why are you running?

I would love to serve my fellow citizens in a meaningful way. Career politicians have – in my opinion – not benefited the people they purport to serve. I also want to set an example for my children and the many young people I have mentored throughout my career.

Briefly describe the core duties of the position you are running for

The Treasurer handles unclaimed property, manages the State’s debt obligations and the investments, and administers scholarship and tuition plans, and helps plan and administer the finances. As a medical clinic administrator I have expertise in contracting, financial management, billing, collections, compliance, dealing with state and federal regulations, and more.

A brief statement about your platform

I am a member of the IAP, and I believe in the principles enunciated in our founding documents. I believe that small, limited and local government gives us the most control over our own lives and best protects our rights, our property and our freedoms.

People have told me they don’t like to “split their ticket.” Let me point out that a vote for an independent Treasurer does not split your ticket. The Treasurer does not make policy. You can support the legislators of your choice, the gubernatorial and legislative candidates who represent your policy positions, yet still vote for an independent for Treasurer.

Someone recently asked about my position on the issues. My response - this is irrelevant. You want an independent managing your money and overseeing the financial affairs of the State. You want someone whose responsibility is only to the voters and who will work with all appropriate State departments and agencies and help make decisions that are the best decisions for the state and its citizens. Vendors should be selected based on their ability to do the best job for the state, not on who they know. Citizens should know that their State Treasurer is an advocate for them.

What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?

I have the education, the work experience and the range of skills necessary to do this job and to do it well.
