Air quality in Carson Valley remained in the good to moderate range all this morning.
Most of the smoke from the Mosquito Fire socked in Reno, with conditions in the city hitting hazardous levels at 11 a.m. today.
As a result of the smoke the University of Nevada, Reno, closed for the day and cancelled outdoor activities.
The Wolf Pack Football team even asked to use Douglas High School’s field to practice, though that didn’t come to fruition on Tuesday night.
Those clear skies may not hold with another wave of smoke forecast to arrive this afternoon.
“Expect continued smoke and air quality impacts from the Mosquito
Fire this week,” forecasters said on Wednesday morning.
As of last update, the fire is 20 percent contained, though some federal sources had that up to 25 percent this morning.
“Steep terrain and critically dry fuels drove rapid fire growth and an aggressive upslope run towards Foresthill Road,” Forest officials said on Wednesday. “A large contingent of firefighters and additional equipment responded to this southeast corner of the fire to actively defend and hold the fire along contingency lines. Over the past week, crews have been preparing a large number of these contingency lines around the fire as a way to prepare for situations like this where the fire escapes primary control lines.”
Forecasters say that there’s a potential for a cold front arriving over the weekend.
“There's potential for an early season cold front with gusty winds Saturday and chances for showers from Sunday through Monday, and even possible high elevation snow showers,” forecasters said.
