Tiger track and field hosts home meet

Douglas High track and field welcomed Carson and Reed for their annual league meet Wednesday. Both the Tigers are Senators ran limited teams and events after a large meet at Reed last weekend and another meet coming Saturday at Galena.

The Douglas girls won the meet with 112 points, while the Tiger boys came in second behind Reed with 87. Carson was third on both the boys and girls side.

The top five finishers in the girls 100 meters set five personal records, as Grace Strabala won in a time of 13.12 seconds.

Fellow Tigers Elizabeth Gneiting and Logan Karwoski, inished in 13.64 and 13.8 to take second and third, respectively.

Carson freshman Lillian Turner and Alexa Ailes took fourth and fifth place in 14.09 and 14.14.

In the field, Karwoski won the high jump with a PR clearance of five feet. Gneiting was second.

Strabala and Gneiting were 1-2 in the 200 meters, while Saule Astronomo was third for Carson.

Bliss Moody won the 400 meters for Douglas in 1:02.37, a season record. Freshman Kiley Girdner was third for the Tigers.

Eleanor Romeo won the 800 for Carson, setting a personal record time of 2 minutes, 38.82 seconds, while Douglas’ Lucia Nord was second in a PR time of 2:53.27.

Carson’s distance runners took the top three podium spots in the 1,600 as Jinnie Ponczoch put together a personal record time of 5:35.21 to win the event.

Brianna Rodriguez-Nunes and Romeo were second and third in the 1,600.

All three finished in the same order for the 3,200.

Douglas freshman Katelyn Coons PR’d in 18.84 to take third in the 100-meter hurdles.

Ava Coons won the 300-meter hurdles and took third in the high jump, clearing 4-10.

Autumn Petit and Katelyn Coons were second and third in the 300-meter hurdles, both setting PR’s in 53.16 and 53.86, respectively.

Sophie Marchut won the discus throw and finished second in the shot put, while fellow senior Megan Strand was second in the discus and third in the shot put.

Douglas’ Stella White cleared 7-0 in the pole vault to finish third.

Hailee Koontz was second in the long jump, touching the sand at 14 feet, three inches.

Freshman Payton Spohr PR’d in the triple jump with a clearance of 30-2.

On the boys side, AJ Thurston and Connor Jackson went 1-2 in the 100 meters, with Thurston setting a personal record in 11.22.

Jackson was fourth in the 200 finishing behind fellow junior Kevin O’Connell, who edged out Jackson by one-tenth of a second in 24.18.

Thurston PR’d in the 400 in 51.53 while Carson’s Tristan Rutledge was third in 53.57.

Jackson Davis took home the top spot in the 800 meters (2:06.24), while Luke Davis was second in 2:07.17. Both marks were personal records.

The pairing were first and third, respectively, in the 1,600.

Jackson Davis also won the 3,200 in 10:39.09.

Carson’s John Pinto was second in the 300-meter hurdles (49.42), while Allen Gomes was third in 51.93.

Kyle Koontz won the shot put with a personal record throw of 41-1. Koontz was third in the discus with another PR throw of 114-6.

Trace Estes won the high jump, clearing 5-8, while Carlo Barton as second in the pole vault for Douglas, jumping over 9-6.

Carson’s Rutledge was third in the long jump with a mark of 19-2.

Aaron Witt, a sophomore with the Senators, took first in the triple jump, setting a PR at 39-2.5.

Carson baseball drops three in Las Vegas

The Senator baseball team couldn’t get around Desert Oasis or Arbor View on Tuesday, dropping both contests.

In a 13-3 loss to a 14-7 Desert Oasis squad, Carson got out to a 3-0 lead after Jordan Sieben got a two-out, two-run single to right field.

Sieben also came out of the bullpen to toss two innings and recorded a strikeout.

Decarlo Quintana also doubled in the loss.

Against Arbor View, Carson again scored three runs of the top of the first before losing 19-4 in three innings.

Cooper Eaton drove in a pair on a double to right field before coming around to score on a wild pitch.

Marcus Montes gave Carson a 4-2 lead on a RBI groundout in the top of the second, but Arbor View outscored the Senators, 17-0, over the next inning-and-a-half.

Wednesday, Carson lost to Liberty, 11-1.

Carson tallied two hits, including a pair from Montes, but the Senators’ lone run came on a double play in the sixth.

UP NEXT: The Senators are 4-14 on the year and will pick back up Tuesday at Galena.

Six-run third inning leads Douglas baseball past Spanish Springs

After falling behind 4-2 after two innings, the Tiger baseball team posted a six-spot in the home half of the third inning Tuesday en route to a 10-5 win.

Owen Evans started the rally with an RBI single with the bases juiced before Sean Lemming drew a walk to knock in another.

Noah Garrison singled in another run in the next at-bat to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.

With two outs, Thomas Young roped a three-run double to center field to put Douglas up 8-4.

Jackson Ovard put together an RBI single in the fifth before Garrison plated the 10^th run of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly.

UP NEXT: Douglas, now 7-9 overall and 4-4 in Class 5A North play, will host McQueen on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.

Douglas softball bests Spanish Springs, run-rules Bishop Manogue

On Tuesday, Douglas High softball used a 2-0 lead through two innings to best Spanish Springs, 2-1.

Talia Tretton bashed a solo homer out to right field to give the Tigers the first run of the contest.

Cam McClelland, who had a monster day against Bishop Manogue, scored Douglas’ second run on a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Lilyann Lee.

In the circle, Mackenzie Willis struck out eight over five innings while allowing just three hits.

Tretton came on in relief to close out the last two innings in which she struck out three and allowed the Cougars’ lone run on two hits.

In a 20-4 win over the Miners on Wednesday, McClelland had a day to remember.

The sophomore drove in six, including a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to give Douglas an 18-3 lead.

Tretton, Dakota Till and Zora Simpson also homered in the win.

Tretton was credited with four RBIs and struck out 10 in the circle.

Haley Wilkinson had three RBIs for the Tigers, while Till and Simpson each drove in a pair.
